Villa Fracanzan Piovene, an eighteenth-century Venetian gem

Villa Fracanzan Piovene was commissioned by nobleman Giovanbattista Fracanzan and built from around 1710, with a façade combining Palladian architectural references and Baroque-style finishes. The villa belongs to the long tradition of Venetian villas built by noble families to oversee their agricultural estates, but stands out for the elegance of its architectural design and the extent of the surrounding park, among the largest and most elaborate in the Berici Hills. The property, later passed to the Piovene family, can still be visited today with guided tours recounting the history of the villa, the family, and the relationship between the manor house and the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The museum of daily life and work in the villa

Inside the villa's barchessa is housed the "Daily Life and Work in a Villa" museum, featuring a collection of vintage tractors, rare farming tools, the old carpentry workshop, granaries and cellars. The restored spaces show the typical working areas of large Venetian agricultural estates, while the restored gastaldo's (farm manager's) house allows visitors to see the kitchen, the bedroom with a loom, the cellar and the laundry room of peasant life. The villa's manor kitchen also preserves a collection of copperware and the famous red marble sink, which local tradition claims Napoleon himself coveted for the Louvre. It is a museum that tells, through concrete objects, the relationship between nobility and peasant world in the Vicenza countryside.

A great historic park in the Berici Hills

The park surrounding Villa Fracanzan Piovene is one of the property's most fascinating features, with tree-lined avenues, water features and expansive green areas stretching at the foot of the Berici Hills. It is a park designed according to the canons of the historic Venetian garden, where the landscape element converses with the villa's architecture, offering striking views in every season. A visit to the park is often paired with the interiors and the museum, allowing visitors to understand how great noble families organised not only the residential building but the entire surrounding landscape as an extension of their social status.

Orgiano beyond the villa: the village and the Berici Hills

Beyond Villa Fracanzan Piovene, Orgiano is a quiet agricultural municipality, resting on the southern slopes of the Berici Hills, with a small historic centre and a territory still devoted to farming. The village also preserves traces of the Pilio castle, linked by local tradition to events said to have inspired Alessandro Manzoni's "The Betrothed", although this connection should be considered with caution and is not universally documented. The area is also a starting point for hiking trails towards Monte delle Piume and other heights of the Berici Hills, offering a good balance between a cultural visit to the villa and walks in the hilly countryside.

An economy still tied to the countryside

Despite the villa's cultural appeal, Orgiano remains a village whose everyday economy revolves around farming in the Berici Hills, with small family-run businesses, vineyards and olive groves benefiting from the favourable hillside exposure. This dual identity, combining a significant historical heritage with simple agricultural life, makes Orgiano an interesting example of how small Venetian municipalities can preserve architectural treasures of national importance while retaining a genuine rural soul, far from the mass-tourism dynamics that characterise other more famous destinations in the region.
