Die Geschichte von Maserada sul Piave
On the banks of the Piave
Maserada sul Piave owes both its name and its character to the great river flowing alongside it. The banks of the Piave along this stretch retain a still-natural riverine landscape, made up of gravel bars, islands shaped by the river's shifting course, and riparian woods rich in flora and fauna. Following the embankments on foot or by bicycle is the best way to appreciate this ever-changing geography, which over the centuries has shaped both the farming life and the very history of the village.
The Codibugnolo oasis
In the hamlet of Salettuol lies the Codibugnolo oasis, a nature trail winding just steps from a monument dedicated to those who fell in the First World War, along the bank of the Piave. The path crosses a hygrophilous forest of white willows and poplars, with elder, strawberry trees and various fruit trees, and in spring bursts into varied bloom that testifies to the biological richness and fertility of the soil along the river's course. It is one of the simplest and most genuine nature experiences the territory has to offer.
Sites of the Great War
Between November 1917 and November 1918, the Piave in this stretch formed a line of defence against the Austro-Hungarian advance following the rout at Caporetto. In Maserada, a monument honours the courage of the Veneto and Caserta brigades and the 44th artillery regiment, engaged in halting the offensive from 15 June 1918, the opening day of the Battle of the Solstice. The Historical Museum of the Great War, housed on Viale Caccianiga, gathers artefacts related to life at the front and the military technology used by the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies along this stretch of the middle Piave.
Countryside and rural life
Away from the embankments, Maserada retains a widespread agricultural character, with cultivated fields and small rural hamlets making up the fabric of the Treviso plain. The church of Santi Pietro e Paolo serves as the religious reference point of the main village, while the hamlets preserve a fabric of everyday life tied to the rhythms of the countryside, in continuity with the productive vocation that has always characterised this part of the province of Treviso.
