Geography and territory
Illasi lies at the mouth of the Val d'Illasi, in the hilly belt that rises from eastern Verona province toward the Lessinia. The municipal territory alternates flatland near the valley's main town with slopes planted with vineyards, in a landscape typical of the pre-Alpine valleys of Verona, rich in historic villas and small villages.
The Scaliger castle
On the hill overlooking the town stands the Scaliger castle of Illasi, an imposing testimony to the medieval era that once controlled access to the valley. Walking along its walls allows visitors to relive the atmosphere of the past and enjoy sweeping views over the Veronese countryside below; the castle is reached via a road branching off near the town church, followed by a walk on foot.
Villa Sagramoso Perez-Pompei
Villa Sagramoso Perez-Pompei was built at the end of the seventeenth century at the wish of Giunio III, Count of Illasi, and designed by the architect Pellesina, who also worked on parts of the Palace of Versailles, Villa Sigurtà and the church of San Nicolò in Verona. When the Pompei family died out, the villa passed by inheritance to the Perez cousins and later to the Sagramoso descendants, who still own it today. The large centuries-old Italian-style park, around sixty hectares, is crossed by a five-kilometre path climbing up to the Scaliger castle; visits to the villa are possible by reservation for groups.
Wine and countryside between Valpolicella and Soave
The Val d'Illasi sits on the eastern edge of the Valpolicella DOC production zone, not far from the Soave area, and much of the municipality's hillside is planted with vineyards. Alongside wine, the valley's countryside retains traditional crops and small family-run farms.
The town and its identity
Illasi serves as a reference point for the entire Val d'Illasi, with a compact historic centre gathered around the parish church and the streets climbing toward the villa and the castle, balancing agricultural life, cultural tourism linked to its historic residences, and small local businesses.
