Die Geschichte von Fontanelle
The Monticano river and the countryside
The Monticano crosses the municipal territory with a gentle flow, typical of the spring-fed rivers of the Treviso plain, nourished by springs that emerge naturally from the ground. Its banks, largely undeveloped, host riverside vegetation and short stretches that can be walked or cycled, offering a close look at a simple yet well-preserved river landscape. Around the watercourse lie cultivated fields and small farms, in a setting where the river functions more as a working element of the fields than as a tourist destination in itself, though it still offers pleasant views for those moving slowly through the area.
A farming economy
The economy of Fontanelle is based largely on agriculture, with cereal, soy and vine crops occupying most of the municipal territory. The farms, often family-run, pass down cultivation practices that have adapted over time to market needs without radically altering the rural landscape of the area. It is a less visible economic model compared with the industrial or tourist districts of other parts of the Marca Trevigiana, but one that gives the territory a coherent character, made of orderly fields, vine rows and scattered farmhouses, where agricultural work remains the prevailing activity to this day.
The hamlets and parish churches
The municipality of Fontanelle is made up of several hamlets, each organised around its own parish church, a historic and social reference point for local communities. These are not buildings of particular artistic significance on a regional scale, but they still represent the identity core of the individual settlements, often the setting for village festivals and patron saint celebrations that mark the calendar year. It is in these occasions, more than in monuments, that one can grasp the authentic character of a rural community still tied to local rhythms and traditions, far from the region's major tourist flows.
Between Treviso and the Prosecco hills
Fontanelle lies in an intermediate position within the Treviso plain, not far from the city of Treviso and along the route leading toward the Prosecco hills further north, between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. This location makes it, above all, a place of passage, useful for those travelling through the area by car or bike, perhaps as part of wider cycling itineraries crossing the plain to reach the hills. One should not expect a multi-day stay focused solely on Fontanelle, but rather a stop that fits well into a broader itinerary across the Marca Trevigiana.
