The 1951 Polesine flood: a memory still alive
On the night between 14 and 15 November 1951 the River Po broke its banks at several points, submerging much of the Polesine, the vast area of Rovigo province between the final stretches of the Adige and the Po. Crespino, situated right on the bank of the great river, was among the towns hardest hit by that catastrophe, which across the province caused roughly a hundred deaths and more than 180,000 people left homeless. Many families from Crespino chose emigration as the only way to rebuild their lives, a phenomenon that permanently marked the area's demographics. Even today the memory of the flood is gathered and passed on through the direct testimony of the community's elders.
The Polesine and life alongside the great river
Crespino is part of the middle Polesine, the strip of Rovigo territory squeezed between the Adige and the Po, for centuries marked by an ambivalent relationship with its waterways: a source of fertility for farmland, but also a source of constant flood risk. The Po embankments running alongside the town are not simply a scenic feature but the result of centuries of hydraulic works necessary to protect a plain that lies much lower than the river's flood level. This forced coexistence with water has over time shaped the character of the local community, accustomed to constant farm labour and continuous vigilance toward the river, elements that still define the identity of Crespino and the whole Polesine today.
A farming economy at the heart of the Polesine
Crespino's territory is intensively farmed today, with arable crops dominating the middle Polesine landscape, from cereals to the vegetable crops typical of the lower Veneto plain. The local economy remains strongly tied to agriculture, with farms of varying size working land made fertile precisely by the Po's historic floods, a paradox that has always accompanied life in these territories. The municipality's population, modest and in line with many other Polesine centres, retains a strong sense of belonging to the land, evidenced also by local initiatives to gather historical memory, such as interview projects with elderly residents who hold direct recollections of the flood and the reconstruction that followed.
The embankment landscape and village life
Walking or cycling along the Po embankments at Crespino means crossing one of the most representative landscapes of the Polesine: a horizon dominated by the great river, poplar groves and farmland stretching as far as the eye can see. The built-up centre retains the layout typical of small riverside villages, with sober buildings and daily life marked by farm work and a few community occasions. There are no major tourist events to report, but for anyone travelling the Po's main embankment between Rovigo and the delta, Crespino offers an authentic stop for understanding this territory's recent history and resilience.
The natural environment of the Po and life along the river
The stretch of Po running alongside Crespino retains, despite the area's intense agricultural development, sections of floodplain with poplar groves, reed beds and riparian vegetation hosting a fair variety of water birds, from herons to cormorants, as well as several river fish species. These floodplain areas, lying between the main embankment and the riverbed, are often subject to flooding and therefore remain less cultivated, offering a relatively natural space in an otherwise farmland-dominated territory. Walking or cycling along the embankment allows a close view of this river ecosystem, as much a part of Crespino's identity as the historical memory of the flood that marked it.
