A hamlet, one of the busiest stretches of the Adriatic coast
Bibione is administratively a hamlet of the municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento, but it is known internationally as one of the busiest beach destinations on the Adriatic. Its fame rests on the long stretch of fine sandy beach, running about ten kilometres between the mouth of the Tagliamento river and the Lugugnana canal, with central sections where the promenade and shoreline reach considerable widths.
The beach and the pine forest
Beyond the beach, Bibione's coastline includes a pine forest stretching toward the mouth of the Tagliamento and the lighthouse, with sand dunes and wetlands of naturalistic interest. This area, less built-up than the central seafront, offers walking and cycling paths through coastal vegetation and lagoon scenery.
The Bibione thermal spa
Around 1960, geological surveys carried out by Agip in the lower plain, searching for oil deposits, revealed the presence of hyperthermal waters in the subsoil. The water rises from a depth of five hundred metres at a temperature of 52 degrees Celsius and has since formed the basis of the thermal spa, which added a wellness and treatment offer alongside the resort's seaside vocation.
The lighthouse
The Bibione lighthouse dates to 1913: it is a cylindrical tower 21 metres tall, visible up to 15 nautical miles from the coast. Damaged by bombing in June 1917, during the First World War, it was rebuilt shortly afterward. The lighthouse stands in an area of natural value, amid pine forest, sand dunes and wetlands, and today is a destination for walks and excursions.
San Michele al Tagliamento, the parent municipality
The municipality of San Michele al Tagliamento, of which Bibione is a hamlet, has much older roots: the area was already known in Roman times, crossed by the Via Postumia Altinate or Annia linking Aquileia to Ravenna. After Byzantine and Lombard invasions, the territory was annexed to the Republic of Venice in 1420; Napoleon turned it into an autonomous municipality in 1797. The much older history of the municipal seat thus runs alongside the far more recent story of Bibione's tourism development, which began in the second half of the twentieth century.
