Die Geschichte von Barbarano Mossano
A Municipality Born from a Merger
Barbarano Mossano was established on February 17, 2018, through the merger of the municipalities of Barbarano Vicentino and Mossano, with a combined population of about 6,800 inhabitants. The two towns lie just three kilometers apart, and their shared administrative history is nothing new: they had already been united under a single government for much of the Middle Ages, when Mossano fell under the jurisdiction of Barbarano, an episcopal fief tied to Vicenza, and again between 1939 and 1947.
The Colli Berici
The municipality lies at the heart of the Colli Berici, the limestone hill range south of Vicenza, characterized by rocky cliffs, woodland, and vegetation typical of karst environments. The hills, modest in elevation but varied in landscape, are home to small stone villages, vineyards, and olive groves, with a dense network of trails allowing exploration on foot or by bicycle.
Covoli and Ancient Settlements
Human presence in the area is documented as far back as the Paleolithic, favored by the shape of the hills: the steep slopes, the south-facing rock walls, and the covoli, natural caves and cavities enlarged over time by human activity, offered natural shelter. Among the best-known examples are the striking Prigioni di Mossano and the Grotta di San Bernardino, sites bearing witness to human presence dating back 200,000 to 250,000 years and remaining today among the main natural attractions of the municipal territory.
Wine and the Farming Landscape
The Colli Berici are an area with a long winemaking tradition, with vineyards spreading across the slopes among woods and rocky outcrops. Barbarano Mossano is part of this district, where small farms produce wine following local tradition, in a rural setting that has remained largely unchanged over time.
A Territory to Explore on Foot
The network of trails crossing the Colli Berici near Barbarano Mossano allows for hikes through woods, caves, and panoramic points overlooking the Vicenza plain. It is an area favored by those seeking slow, nature-based tourism away from the main crowds, with the chance to combine walks, cave visits, and food-and-wine stops in the villages.
