Die Geschichte von Riva del Garda
A lakeside town amid the Dolomites
Riva del Garda occupies a unique spot on the map: this is where Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake, narrows between dolomitic cliffs that drop almost to the water's edge. Within a few kilometres the landscape combines mountain and lake, with views that change colour through the day, from the pale grey of the rock to the deep blue of the wind-rippled surface. Administratively the town belongs to Trentino, yet its climate and vegetation set it apart from the rest of the alpine region. Walking along the shore, views of high mountains alternate with an almost maritime atmosphere, a contrast that has made Riva one of the most photographed destinations on Lake Garda. Its position, at the northern tip of the lake, also makes it a natural meeting point between Trentino, Lombardy and Veneto, a tourist crossroads for over a century.
The harbour, the Torre Apponale and the Rocca
The heart of Riva del Garda is the harbour, busy with sailing and motor boats facing onto Piazza III Novembre, the town's arcaded main square. Rising above it is the Torre Apponale, the old civic tower that once served as a lighthouse and lookout point and can still be climbed today for a sweeping view over lake and mountains. A short walk away, literally standing on the water, is the Rocca, the fortress built from the fourteenth century onward and reshaped many times over the centuries, surrounded by a moat connected to the lake. Inside it houses the Museo Alto Garda, which tells the history, art and nature of the area through archaeological collections and rooms devoted to the lakeside landscape. The Rocca complex, together with the tower and the arcaded square, forms a compact and coherent waterfront that makes Riva's historic centre one of the most recognisable on all of Lake Garda.
The mild climate and the lakeside promenade
Thanks to the moderating effect of Lake Garda's large body of water, Riva enjoys an unusually mild microclimate for a town surrounded by Trentino mountains. Winters are milder than in the alpine hinterland and summers are long and sunny, conditions that since the eighteenth century have favoured the growth of olive trees, palms, cypresses and oleanders all along the shore. Riva's lakeside promenade, shaded and well kept, is the ideal place for an evening stroll, with white sails in view during the afternoon and mountain lights reflected on the water at sunset. It is no coincidence that, as early as the late nineteenth century, the town became a holiday destination for Central European aristocracy, drawn precisely by this temperate climate that allowed pleasant stays even in autumn and early spring, when the cold was already setting in elsewhere in the mountains.
Sailing, windsurfing and sport in the Ora and Pelèr winds
Riva del Garda has for decades been considered one of the world's capitals of sailing and windsurfing, thanks to a steady and predictable weather phenomenon: in the morning the Pelèr blows, a wind from the north coming down the valley, while in the early afternoon it gives way to the Ora, a wind from the south rising up from lower Lake Garda. This regular alternation, almost daily for much of the year, has turned the Riva basin into a natural regatta field, frequented by sailing schools, historic clubs and international athletes. Beyond the water, the surrounding area is a reference point for outdoor sports: the limestone walls above the town offer climbing routes of every difficulty, while the trails toward Monte Rocchetta and the Bocca di Riva are classic routes for trekking and mountain biking, with views stretching from the lake to the Brenta Dolomites.
Cascata del Varone, history and the surrounding area
Just a few minutes from the centre of Riva lies the Cascata del Varone, one of Trentino's most visited natural sites: the water plunges over 90 metres into a narrow, damp gorge carved into the rock over thousands of years, reachable via suspended walkways that let visitors get close to the jet of water. The town also has a notable literary past: between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century it was visited by Franz Kafka, who spent a period of convalescence here, Friedrich Nietzsche and Thomas Mann, all drawn by the climate and the atmosphere of the lake. Riva del Garda is today the ideal starting point for exploring the Trentino side of Lake Garda: a few kilometres away lies Torbole, another world reference point for sailing and windsurfing, and a little further inland Arco, a town known for sport climbing, its medieval castle and its Renaissance old town.
