The scattered municipality of the Val di Non
Predaia was created on 1 January 2015 from the merger of six municipalities of the Val di Non: Taio, Coredo, Smarano, Tres, Vervò and Sfruz, which chose to unite their administrations while keeping the identity of each village fully intact. It is an example of a "scattered municipality" (comune sparso), a single administrative body made up of several distinct settlements, spread across a broad plateau that slopes down from mountain woods to the orchards of the valley floor. This administrative choice has made it possible to streamline public services while keeping local traditions, patron saint festivals and the small economies of each village alive. The municipal territory covers a vast area, with elevations ranging from the lakeshores to high mountain pastures, offering very different landscapes just a few kilometres apart, in a mosaic of orchards, woods and open views over the mountains of the valley.
The orchards and the Melinda PDO apple
The Val di Non is the home of the Melinda apple, the PDO brand that unites thousands of fruit growers from the valley in one of Italy's best-known cooperative consortia. In Predaia's territory the orchards trace an orderly landscape of rows climbing the slopes, mixing traditional orchards with more modern plantings, with pink and white blossoms that in spring turn the plateau into one great garden. Autumn is instead the harvest season, when tractors travel the country roads loaded with crates of apples bound for markets across Europe. Walking among the orchards of Predaia lets visitors observe the fruit growers' work up close and understand how much this crop has shaped the local economy, landscape and even the gastronomic traditions, from apple desserts to apple-based spirits. The apple is not simply an agricultural product, but a true symbol of identity for the Val di Non.
The Sanctuary of San Romedio
The Sanctuary of San Romedio is Predaia's most famous landmark and one of the most striking places of worship in the Alps. Built on a limestone spur more than seventy metres high, the complex unfolds over several levels linked by a staircase of more than a hundred steps, among chapels, altars and small spaces carved into the rock. According to tradition, the hermit Romedio chose this isolated spot to withdraw in prayer, and over the following centuries a cult grew around his figure that still makes the sanctuary a place of pilgrimage today. Legend also tells of a bear that killed the saint's horse and, once tamed, became his mount all the way to Trento: for this reason, next to the sanctuary there is still a small enclosure with bears today. The Sanctuary of San Romedio is considered one of the most distinctive rock-hewn sanctuaries in Europe, and the climb to the top rewards visitors with spectacular views over the valley and the surrounding orchards.
Lake Coredo, Lake Tavon and the woods
Surrounded by the conifer woods of the plateau, Lake Coredo and Lake Tavon form a small system of lakes much loved by families and hikers. The shores of Lake Coredo, the larger of the two, are equipped with picnic areas, a footpath that circles the lake and grassy patches to stop at on summer days; the nearby Lake Tavon, smaller and more secluded, keeps a wilder atmosphere, surrounded by quiet woods. Both lakes lend themselves to easy walks suitable for all ages, to recreational fishing and, in winter, to charming snowy walks among the frosted trees. All around, the woods of Predaia offer kilometres of marked trails linking the lakes to the villages of the plateau, crossing fir woods, clearings and scenic points from which the eye sweeps over the mountains of the Val di Non. This mosaic of water and forest is one of the elements that make Predaia's territory an ideal destination for slow tourism and for those seeking tranquillity in close contact with nature.
Villages, traditions and hikes in the valley
Each of the six villages that make up Predaia keeps its own historic centre, a church and a calendar of festivals that mark the farming year, from the apple blossom in spring to the apple harvest in autumn. Taio, the most populous administrative centre, along with the smaller Coredo, Smarano, Tres, Vervò and Sfruz, each offer small examples of alpine architecture, fountains, votive frescoes and craft workshops linked to the valley's produce. The hiking network of the Val di Non connects Predaia's villages to wider routes that climb toward the woods of the Maddalene range and descend toward the Noce valley floor, allowing multi-day itineraries among mountain huts and alpine pastures. In winter the plateau becomes a destination for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, while in summer village festivals, local produce markets and events dedicated to the apple and its products multiply. Visiting Predaia therefore means discovering not a single village, but a small archipelago of mountain communities united by the same landscape and the same farming roots.
