The gateway to the Cembra Valley

Lavis stands at the point where the Adige plain, just north of Trento, meets the mouth of the Cembra Valley, the side valley carved by the Avisio torrent. This position made it, for centuries, an obligatory passage for those travelling up from the city towards the mountain valleys and for those coming down with the produce of mountain farming. The town still plays this hinge role today: visitors arriving from Trento who want to head into the terraced Cembra Valley almost inevitably pass through Lavis, just as those wishing to head north towards the Rotaliana Plain, another celebrated wine-growing area of Trentino, do the same. Its economy, both agricultural and industrial in character, reflects well this borderland position between cultivated plain and alpine valleys.

The wines of Lavis and Müller Thurgau

The winemaking vocation of Lavis is ancient and closely tied to the presence of historic local wine cellars, a point of reference for the area's oenological production. The vineyards climbing the slopes towards the Cembra Valley benefit from an exposure and altitude particularly favourable to growing Müller Thurgau, a white grape variety that in this part of Trentino reaches one of its finest expressions, prized for its aromatic freshness and its ability to convey the character of the mountain territory. Alongside this flagship variety, the Lavis area also contributes to the production of Trentino's renowned sparkling wines, made using the classic method, which in recent decades have helped establish Trentino as one of Italy's most acclaimed territories for mountain sparkling wine.

The Avisio torrent and its gorge

The Avisio torrent, which rises among the Dolomites and flows through the Val di Fiemme and the Cembra Valley before joining the Adige right at Lavis, has carved over millennia a deep gorge into the porphyry rock that geologically characterises the whole area. This canyon, with its dark walls smoothed by the water, is one of the most distinctive landscape features of the Lavis territory and bears witness to the erosive force of the torrent, the same force that further upstream has shaped the celebrated terraces of the Cembra Valley. Local porphyry, a reddish-violet volcanic rock, has long been a historic resource for the area's economy, used for centuries as building material and for paving roads throughout Trentino.

The old town and local life

The historic core of Lavis retains the appearance of a Trentino town with a long trading and agricultural tradition, with arcaded streets, noble buildings and a central square that still hosts the market and the main occasions for community gathering. The town has managed to maintain its own identity despite lying within Trento's area of influence, developing over time an industrial fabric alongside its traditional agricultural vocation tied to viticulture. Walking through the streets of the centre, one can still sense the atmosphere of a community rooted in its own territory, proud of its wine cellars and of its role as a gateway to the surrounding alpine valleys. Bars, small shops and restaurants around the main square offer a chance to taste local products, from wines to mountain gastronomic specialities, in an authentic and little-touristed setting.

The Cembra Valley, terraces and surroundings

From Lavis it is easy to reach the Cembra Valley, one of Trentino's most spectacular wine landscapes, where vineyards are laid out on terraces held up by dry-stone walls that follow the steep slopes carved by the Avisio. A little further into the valley lie the famous Segonzano earth pyramids, striking column-shaped geological formations each capped by a boulder, created by the differential erosion of morainic deposits. In the opposite direction, heading north along the Adige, the Rotaliana Plain opens up, another area of great winemaking tradition in Trentino. Not far away, the city of Trento offers castles, museums and the cultural life of the provincial capital, rounding out an area rich in landscapes, history and wine culture for which Lavis is the natural starting point.
