A town of the Alto Garda in the Sarca valley
Arco lies in the Sarca valley, the river corridor that runs down from the Brenta Dolomites to Lake Garda, in the area known as the Trentino Alto Garda. Its position, enclosed by rock faces that shelter it from cold northern winds, gives it a microclimate that is notably milder than the rest of Trentino, with mild winters and warm but breezy summers. This trait made Arco a favoured place to stay as far back as the nineteenth century, and it still draws visitors in every season today. The old town, with its cobbled streets, shaded squares and pastel-coloured buildings, spreads out at the foot of the rocky spur crowned by the castle, while all around the landscape alternates olive groves, vineyards and Mediterranean woodland. Arco is today a reference point for anyone visiting Lake Garda, offering a more intimate and authentic alternative to the lakeside resorts, while still being just minutes from Riva del Garda.
The Castello di Arco and Dürer's watercolour
The undisputed symbol of Arco is its Castle, a medieval fortified complex built on a spur of limestone rock that towers over the whole town. Now reduced to an evocative ruin, the stronghold still preserves towers, walls and fresco fragments that testify to its importance as a stronghold of the Counts of Arco. The castle's international fame rests above all on a celebrated watercolour painted by Albrecht Dürer during one of his journeys towards Italy, at the end of the fifteenth century: the work, now held at the Louvre, precisely depicts the rocky spur and the fortress, and is regarded as one of the earliest landscape views in the history of Western art. Climbing up to the castle means retracing the very views that captivated the great German master, and enjoying a panorama that stretches from the Sarca valley all the way to Lake Garda.
The Habsburg health resort, the Belle Époque town centre and the Arboreto
In the second half of the nineteenth century Arco became one of the most renowned winter health resorts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, chosen for its mild climate as a place of cure and residence by the Habsburg aristocracy, including Archduke Albert of Austria, who stayed there for long periods and helped to build the town's prestige. This period left an architectural legacy that is still clearly visible in Arco's Belle Époque town centre, with villas, historic hotels and the Casinò, a building that recalls the fashionable social life of nineteenth-century holidaymaking. Another testimony of that era is the Arboreto di Arco, a botanical garden created precisely to test the acclimatisation of exotic plants from warm climates, taking advantage of the mildness of the local microclimate: a park where visitors can today stroll among Mediterranean and subtropical species in the heart of Trentino.
Arco, capital of sport climbing
Beyond its history, Arco is today known worldwide as one of the capitals of sport climbing. The rock faces of the Sarca valley, rich in bolted crags of every difficulty level, have turned the area into a reference destination for climbers from all over the world, who find favourable climbing conditions here for practically the whole year. The bond between Arco and this sport is sealed by the Rock Master, a historic international sport climbing festival held every year in the town, drawing professional athletes and enthusiasts alike in an event that combines competition, outdoor culture and community life. Walking through the streets of Arco, it is not unusual to come across groups of climbers heading for the crags that surround the valley, a sign of how deeply this discipline has become part of the town's identity.
Mild climate, the Garda cycle path and surroundings
Arco's mild climate, favoured by its proximity to Lake Garda and the shelter of the surrounding mountains, allows olive trees to be grown and keeps the countryside green and inviting in every season. One of the best ways to discover this part of the Alto Garda is to ride the Garda cycle path, a protected and scenic route that links Arco to Riva del Garda and continues on to Torbole, passing through olive groves, reed beds and lake views. Riva del Garda, with its lakeside promenade and old town facing the water, and Torbole, a historic destination for sailing and windsurfing thanks to the steady Ora and Peler winds, complete a triangle of destinations easily reached from Arco by bike or in just a few minutes by car, making the town an excellent base for exploring the whole Alto Garda.
