Introduction and location
Zeri lies in the upper Lunigiana, in the far north-west of Tuscany's Massa-Carrara province, on almost entirely mountainous terrain that touches the borders of Liguria and Emilia-Romagna. The municipality has no single compact old town; instead it is made up of around thirty small hamlets scattered across the slopes, including Patigno, the seat of local government. This pattern of dispersed settlements, typical of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, reflects a long history of sheep farming, woodland use and transhumance, still visible today in the farmed landscape and stone-built hamlets.
History and origins
Like much of the Lunigiana, the Zeri area was for centuries part of the feudal world dominated by local lordships, above all the Malaspina family, who long controlled castles and the routes linking Tuscany, Liguria and the Po plain. Geographic isolation and altitude shaped a mountain economy based on sheep farming, subsistence agriculture and small peasant landholdings, followed by significant depopulation during the twentieth century as residents moved to cities or abroad. The scattered hamlets still bear traces of this rural past, in stone houses, mule tracks and old pasture boundaries.
Nature and landscape
Zeri's landscape is shaped by the ridges of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with chestnut and beech woods climbing toward high pastures and mountain passes marking the border with Emilia-Romagna and Liguria. Mountain streams cross the slopes, alongside a dense network of trails and old mule tracks now used for hiking and outdoor activities well away from the main tourist routes. It remains a strongly rural environment, where sheep farming coexists with well-preserved woodland, clearings and small hamlets, offering panoramic views over the whole Lunigiana and, on clear days, toward the Tyrrhenian coast.
Things to do and see
Zeri lends itself to slow travel, with walks between hamlets, hikes along the Apennine ridges, and stops in small rural settlements where time seems to have stood still. The many small villages, each with its own little church and cluster of stone houses, allow circular routes exploring mountain architecture and the surrounding pastoral landscape. In the cooler months the area draws walkers and hikers seeking quiet and open views over the Lunigiana, while in autumn the chestnut woods take on striking colours much loved by lovers of the Apennine mountains.
Flavours and traditions
Zeri's culinary tradition is built around mountain sheep farming, in particular the native Zerasca breed, raised for centuries on the municipality's pastures and used in traditional lamb dishes and sheep's milk cheeses. Alongside livestock farming, chestnuts play a major role, grown in the woods surrounding the hamlets and turned into flour, sweets and baked goods following long-standing peasant recipes. Wild mushrooms, foraged herbs and mountain honey complete a simple, genuine food basket tied to the seasonal rhythms of a still deeply rural area.
