The Fagiolo di Lamon, an IGP excellence

The Fagiolo di Lamon della Vallata Bellunese bean holds Protected Geographical Indication status and is traditionally grown on the lands of Lamon and neighbouring towns, prized for its thin skin, creamy texture and delicate flavour that make it sought after by chefs across Italy. Cultivation still partly follows traditional methods, often on small family plots, and the product is at the centre of local festivals and events celebrating its quality, particularly in the autumn months after the harvest. Tasting Lamon beans directly at a village trattoria, perhaps paired with traditional Belluno dishes, is one of the most authentic experiences the territory can offer.

The plateau and high-altitude pastures

Lamon's territory unfolds across a scenic plateau, with wide hay meadows and pastures that in summer are dotted with wildflowers and still host active mountain dairy huts for livestock farming. This open landscape, less enclosed than the narrower valleys of the Belluno area, offers sweeping views over the surrounding mountains and the Vette Feltrine, particularly striking on clear days when the view stretches for kilometres. It is an ideal setting for easy walks suitable for families, as well as for more experienced hikers wanting to push toward the higher elevations of the park.

The Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park

Part of Lamon's municipal territory falls within the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, established to protect one of the most intact alpine ecosystems of the eastern Dolomites, with beech woods, high-altitude grasslands and wildlife including chamois and numerous birds of prey. Marked trails leave from the town and venture into the park, offering the chance to walk for hours without encountering large crowds, an increasingly rare experience in the more famous Dolomites. The park's presence also ensures careful control over territorial development, keeping intact the rural and mountain landscape that characterises Lamon.

Stone hamlets and mountain life

The municipality of Lamon is made up of numerous hamlets scattered across the plateau and surrounding slopes, many of which preserve a rural stone layout typical of Belluno mountain architecture, with houses clustered together for protection from the cold and small churches marking the centre of each settlement. There are no grand monuments, but a coherent human landscape, the product of a mountain life built on farming, livestock and, more recently, slow tourism tied to hiking and food culture. Visiting these hamlets at a leisurely pace lets travellers understand how the Lamon community has adapted over the centuries to a demanding environment.

When to go and what to expect

Summer is the best season to enjoy the flowering pastures and hikes toward the Vette Feltrine, with mild temperatures even when the Veneto plain suffers from heat. Autumn, especially between September and October, is harvest time and the season for festivals dedicated to the Lamon bean, a perfect occasion to combine food and landscape. Winter brings snow and a quiet atmosphere, with fewer facilities for winter sports compared to the big Dolomite resorts, while spring brings the meadows' thaw and the first colours on the slopes. It is a destination that rewards time and curiosity more than haste.
