Casier

History and origins

The earliest evidence of human presence in the Casier area dates back a thousand years before Christ, with bronze objects, pottery and tombs found in the bed of the Sile River. By the early Middle Ages the area was already inhabited, as shown by a document from 790 mentioning a furnace at Dosson and joint ownership of a water mill at Quinto. Around the year 1000 the lords of Casier, from whom the town takes its name, built a fortified residence along the Sile to control the busy commercial traffic that moved along the river toward Treviso.

Dosson and the hamlets

Casier's town hall stands in the hamlet of Dosson, the municipality's most populous centre, while the wider territory also takes in the localities of Frescada, Le Grazie, La Sicilia and Camate. This division into several hamlets reflects the history of a town that grew up around small rural settlements strung along the course of the Sile.

The Sile and the natural park

Casier's territory lies almost entirely within the Sile River Regional Natural Park, which protects the river's entire course across the provinces of Padua, Treviso and Venice. River bends, reed beds, historic mills and cycle and pedestrian paths mark a watery landscape that is the town's main natural attraction, drawing walkers and cyclists heading toward Treviso and the lagoon.

Dosson's red radicchio

The hamlet of Dosson is known for growing red radicchio, a signature product of Treviso's market-gardening tradition, celebrated each year with a dedicated village festival that draws visitors from neighbouring towns and highlights the local farms involved in its cultivation.

Local life and economy

Casier's economy combines market gardening, with radicchio as its flagship crop, with commercial and service activities favoured by its proximity to Treviso, of which the town is effectively a residential extension along the Sile.

How to get there

Casier lies just a few kilometres south of Treviso, easily reached by car or bicycle along the Sile cycle path, as well as by the area's urban and suburban buses. The reference railway station is Treviso.
