حكاية Breda di Piave
On the left bank of the Piave
The municipal territory stretches across the plain north-east of Treviso, with the Piave river marking its eastern boundary. The river's course, with its complex history of floods and overflows, shaped the territory for centuries, and its waters remain the municipality's most recognisable geographical feature, also linked to the memory of the First World War, when the Piave was a front line.
From Roman veterans' lands to the medieval castle
Archaeological finds of worked flints and bronze fibulae point to human presence in the area already in the pre-Roman Veneto period, while Roman-age remains, including amphorae and tombs, confirm settled occupation in that era. The name Breda probably derives from predia, the land grants given to Roman army veterans. By the early eleventh century a castle called Breda already existed, owned by the bishop of Treviso, later also known as the castle of the Valvassori.
Venetian rule and the villas
In the early fifteenth century the Treviso March came under the control of the Republic of Venice, which brought the territory three centuries of relative peace. It was during this period that Venetian patricians began building their villas around Breda, in the style of country residences that still characterises the Veneto countryside today. One of them, built around 1790 to a design by the architect Giovanni Mazzi, remains one of the most significant examples of this era.
The countryside and farming life today
The municipality's economy remains largely tied to agriculture, with fields of cereals and fodder crops alternating with vineyards, in an orderly landscape typical of the Treviso plain. Historic farmsteads and villas still dot the territory today, offering a picture of the Veneto countryside that has remained largely faithful to its historical layout.
