Tirolo, the panoramic village above Merano

Perched on a natural terrace at around 600 metres above sea level, Tirolo looks down over the basin of Merano, with views stretching from the Adige Valley to the Passiria Valley and up to the peaks of the Texel Group. The village, of ancient origins, owes its fame to having given its name to the entire historical region of Tyrol, of which it was for centuries the political and symbolic centre. Today Tirolo is a renowned holiday village, with hotels, farmsteads and restaurants set among greenery, appreciated for its mild climate all year round and for the calm that contrasts with lively Merano just below. The lanes of the centre, the flowering gardens and the glimpses down to the valley floor make strolling among the houses a pleasure in every season, while the closeness to Merano allows visitors to combine mountain life with the services and vibrancy of a well-known spa town, without ever straying far from the centre.

Castel Tirolo, the cradle of Tyrol

A symbol of the village and of the whole region, Castel Tirolo (Schloss Tirol) was the seat of the Counts of Tyrol, the dynasty that between the 12th and 14th centuries gave its name to the entire historical territory now divided between South Tyrol, Trentino and Austrian Tyrol. The castle, with its famous richly decorated Romanesque portal, stands on a rocky spur at the edge of the village and looks down over the valley below. Since 2003 it has housed the Museum of History and Culture of the Province of Bolzano (Landesmuseum), which traces the history of South Tyrol from the Middle Ages to the present day through rooms set up within the castle's historic halls, gothic chambers, chapel and walkways. A visit here makes clear why Castel Tirolo is considered the place of origin of Tyrolean identity, while its ramparts also offer one of the most striking panoramas over Merano and the surrounding basin.

Castel Fontana and Ezra Pound's residence

A short distance from Castel Tirolo stands Castel Fontana, also known by its German name Brunnenburg, a castle of medieval origin that during the 20th century became the residence of the American poet Ezra Pound, one of the most debated figures in the literature of the past century. Here the poet lived for long periods together with his daughter Mary de Rachewiltz, who has helped keep alive the connection between the castle and her father's literary legacy. Today Castel Fontana also houses an ethnographic and agricultural museum dedicated to mountain farming life, with tools, everyday objects and reconstructions that recount work on the farmsteads and vineyards of the area before mechanisation. The combination of literary intrigue, the castle's atmosphere and testimonies of rural life makes a visit to Castel Fontana an ideal complement to exploring Castel Tirolo.

Apple orchards, vineyards and the Sissi Trail

The area around Tirolo benefits from a particularly mild microclimate, favoured by its sunny exposure and the shelter of the surrounding mountains, conditions that for centuries have allowed apple orchards and vineyards to be cultivated almost up to the edge of the village. Walking among the rows, visitors encounter apple trees in blossom in spring and stretches of vines producing white and red wines typical of the Merano area. The best-known link between Tirolo and Merano is the Sissi Trail, a scenic path that partly retraces the routes loved by Empress Elisabeth of Austria during her stays in Merano, winding through chestnut woods, terraced vineyards and viewpoints overlooking the basin. The route, which can be walked in a couple of hours, is one of the most popular walks in the area, valued both for its scenery and for the relaxed atmosphere blending nature with Habsburg-era history.

Hiking and surroundings: the Texel Group and Merano 2000

Thanks to its position, Tirolo is an ideal starting point for exploring the area around Merano on foot. To the north, the trails of the Texelgruppe Nature Park open up, with peaks over 3,000 metres and the famous Meraner Höhenweg high route offering itineraries for hikers of every level, past alpine huts, streams and mountain panoramas. On the opposite side of the valley, reachable from Merano by cable car, lies the Merano 2000 plateau, a hiking area in summer and a ski resort in winter, with wide high-altitude meadows also suited to families. The surrounding area also has historic irrigation channels (the so-called waalwege), further farmsteads and small hamlets that round out a picture of active tourism, local cuisine and landscapes that change with the seasons, always with Merano and its basin as a reference point below.
