San Lorenzo Dorsino in the Banale Valley, at the Foot of the Brenta
San Lorenzo Dorsino is a municipality created on 1 January 2015 from the merger of San Lorenzo in Banale and Dorsino, two villages of the Giudicarie Esteriori that share the Banale Valley, the open basin at the foot of the Dolomiti di Brenta between the Paganella plateau and the Terme di Comano spa area. It is not the first time the two villages have lived under one administration: a decree had already merged them into a single municipality in 1927, before they were separated again in 1954 and reunited almost sixty years later. The municipal territory, covering nearly 74 square kilometres, today includes the hamlets of Andogno, Deggia, Dorsino, Moline, Nembia, San Lorenzo in Banale, the municipal seat at 758 metres, and Tavodo, home to around 1,500 people in all. From the cultivated valley floor the landscape climbs quickly toward pastures and dolomitic walls, entering the boundaries of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, the largest protected area in Trentino.
San Lorenzo in Banale, One of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, and its Masi
San Lorenzo in Banale is part of the I Borghi più belli d'Italia network, a recognition that certifies the value of its historic core, grown around the ancient Sette Ville, the Seven Villages of the Banale area. What gives the village its character are the masi, the traditional rural farmhouses of the Giudicarie Esteriori: stone buildings with lattice loggias for drying crops, stables on the ground floor, living quarters above and, at the top, a hayloft often reached by a driveway ramp called a pont, as in the notable example of Casa Mazoleti. The lanes are paved with salesà, the local stone that still accompanies a stroll among arches, portals and small courtyards. Among the hamlets, Senaso preserves the most intact fabric, while other settlements such as Pergnano were partly rebuilt after the fires that struck the area more than once in the nineteenth century.
Ciuìga del Banale, a Slow Food Presidium
The signature product of San Lorenzo Dorsino is the ciuìga del Banale, a unique cured meat recognised as a Slow Food Presidium and a Traditional Agri-Food Product. It was born from the poverty that for centuries marked the Giudicarie Esteriori: farming families sold the best cuts of pork and used the leftover parts together with a large quantity of turnips, which can make up 35 to 40 percent of the mixture, to still obtain a nourishing sausage for the cold months. The turnips are cooked and pressed, combined with shoulder, neck, belly and jowl meat, seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic, stuffed into natural casings and smoked for about eight days. Fresh ciuìga is eaten boiled and served with potatoes, savoy cabbage or polenta, while the more aged version can be sliced like a salami. Production, tied to the tradition of winter pig slaughter, is today kept alive by a single local producer, the Famiglia Cooperativa Brenta Paganella, founded in the late nineteenth century by Don Lorenzo Guetti.
The Dolomiti di Brenta, Val d'Ambiez and the Park's Nature
The territory of San Lorenzo Dorsino opens toward the heart of the Dolomiti di Brenta, the only dolomitic group west of the Adige and part of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The main access to the Val d'Ambiez starts from San Lorenzo in Banale, a valley of glacial origin that climbs up to Cima Tosa, the highest point of the Brenta at 3,173 metres, between the Cacciatore and Silvio Agostini refuges and the chamois, golden eagles and bearded vultures that roam these altitudes. Along the way lies the so-called Cimitero dei Fossili, the Fossil Cemetery, where the remains of bivalves around 195 million years old emerge, evidence of the ancient tropical seas that once covered this land. Further down, the small Lake Nembia, just south of Lake Molveno, offers beaches, play areas and a roughly 3-kilometre loop path connecting the two lakes, suited to family walks and cycling along the shores.
History and Experiences Around Castel Mani
For centuries the territory was part of the ancient Nove Ville, the Nine Villages of the Banale, organised into a Comun Grande and a Comun Pichol, under the Prince-Bishop of Trento until 1800, when, after the Congress of Vienna, the Giudicarie passed to the County of Tyrol. Above San Lorenzo in Banale stand the remains of Castel Mani, a medieval castle documented from 1207, when the Bishop of Trento invested Uldarico d'Arco with it: damaged by the Napoleonic invasions of the late eighteenth century and partly dismantled as a stone quarry in the nineteenth, it survives today only as a perimeter wall within a public garden. In Dorsino, the church of San Giorgio holds frescoes attributed to Cristoforo II Baschenis, of the renowned family of fresco painters from Bergamo active across Trentino. Visitors today can combine this history with concrete experiences: the Casa del Parco in San Lorenzo in Banale, the Ecomuseo della Judicaria, and the network of trails linking the valley floor to the refuges of the Dolomiti di Brenta.
