حكاية Monguelfo-Tesido
A municipality of two villages in the Alta Val Pusteria
Monguelfo-Tesido was formed by the administrative union of two distinct centres of the Alta Val Pusteria: Monguelfo (Welsberg), the main village on the valley floor along the state road connecting Brunico to Dobbiaco, and Tesido (Taisten), a smaller hamlet perched higher up on the sunny, south-facing slope. Although united in a single municipality, the two settlements retain their own identity: Monguelfo is the hub for services and the railway station, while Tesido keeps a rural character, made up of scattered farmsteads, terraced meadows and stone-and-timber houses typical of South Tyrolean architecture. The municipal territory stretches from the valley floor up to the wooded slopes leading toward the Dolomiti di Braies, offering landscapes from mown hay meadows to coniferous forests. This double soul, of valley and mountain, makes Monguelfo-Tesido a versatile starting point for exploring the Alta Pusteria at a relaxed pace.
The gateway to Lake Braies
Monguelfo-Tesido is known above all as one of the gateways to Lake Braies (Pragser Wildsee), the famous turquoise lake framed by the cliffs of the Croda del Becco, located a little further up in the Valle di Braies. From the municipal territory depart the roads and paths that climb toward the lake, a much-photographed destination that draws visitors from all over the world, especially in summer. Monguelfo's position at the entrance to the side valley makes it a natural base for those arriving by train or car who wish to reach the lake while avoiding parking directly on its shores, often congested during the high season. The municipality is also close to the entrance of the Valle di Casies (Gsieser Tal), another, less-travelled side valley with isolated farmsteads and an authentic agricultural landscape. This double proximity makes Monguelfo-Tesido a strategic base for excursions to different destinations while staying in one place.
Castello di Monguelfo (Welsperg Castle)
Overlooking the village of Monguelfo, on a rocky spur just above the settlement, stands the Castello di Monguelfo, also known by its German name, Welsperg Castle. The stronghold, of medieval origin, was for centuries the residence and fortress of the lords of Welsperg, one of the most important noble families of the Val Pusteria, whose name lives on today in the German name of the municipality, Welsberg-Taisten. The structure, with its walls, tower and buildings gathered around a courtyard, is a significant example of Alpine fortified architecture and remains one of the most recognisable historic buildings in the Alta Pusteria. Although private property with limited access, the castle serves as a visual landmark for anyone travelling through the valley, clearly visible from the valley floor and the surrounding paths. Walking nearby allows visitors to observe its silhouette up close and understand the role it played in controlling the valley during the Middle Ages.
Tesido: frescoed churches and farmsteads among the meadows
Tesido (Taisten), the higher and sunnier hamlet of the municipality, preserves a rural landscape of scattered farmsteads, hay meadows and woods alternating along the slope. The small village holds testimonies of Alpine sacred art, including chapels and churches decorated with frescoes recounting the popular devotion and religious traditions of the Val Pusteria over past centuries. Walking among the wood-and-stone houses, often adorned with flowering balconies in summer, one can still sense the atmosphere of South Tyrolean farming villages, where mountain agriculture and livestock farming remain part of daily life. From the farmsteads of Tesido, visitors also enjoy a wide panorama over the Val Pusteria and the surrounding peaks, a viewpoint appreciated by those choosing quieter walks compared to the more crowded destinations nearby. The contrast between lively Monguelfo, down in the valley, and calm Tesido, on the sunny slope, well defines the identity of this municipality.
Cross-country skiing, cycle path and hiking
Monguelfo-Tesido is a reference point for outdoor sports in every season. In winter, the municipal territory is crossed by cross-country ski trails connected to the network of the Alta Val Pusteria, one of the most renowned areas in the Alps for this discipline, with tracks winding through woods and snowy clearings. In summer, the same area becomes ideal terrain for cycling thanks to the Val Pusteria cycle path, a flat, signposted route linking Dobbiaco to Brunico and beyond, allowing cyclists to cross Monguelfo away from traffic. Numerous trails start from the valley floor and the farmsteads of Tesido toward the wooded slopes and high-altitude pastures, with itineraries suited to families and hikers heading toward the Dolomiti di Braies. The combination of cross-country trails, cycle path and mountain paths makes Monguelfo-Tesido a well-balanced destination for an active stay, a short distance from Lake Braies and the Valle di Casies.
