Introduction and location

Bellamonte lies on a broad, sun-facing terrace at over 1,300 metres above sea level, a hamlet of the municipality of Predazzo in Val di Fiemme, Trentino. Its position along the state road connecting the valley to Passo Rolle makes it a natural gateway toward eastern Trentino and the border with Veneto. The village overlooks a wide panorama stretching from the surrounding conifer woods to the more distant peaks, and is easily reached both from Predazzo and from the other villages of the valley, which remains famous for its resonance wood and violin-making tradition.

History and origins

Like much of the high-altitude settlements of Val di Fiemme, Bellamonte grew out of forestry and pastoral activities: alpine pastures, timber woods and summer grazing that for centuries shaped the rhythm of life for local families, historically governed under the customs of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme. The name itself, evoking a beautiful, sunlit place, reflects a quality already recognised by the valley's early inhabitants. Only during the twentieth century did the hamlet begin its transformation into a tourist destination, helped by the opening of the road toward Passo Rolle and, later, by the development of ski facilities that flanked the traditional agro-forestry-pastoral economy with mountain tourism.

Nature between Paneveggio, the Pale di San Martino and the Lagorai

Bellamonte is a gateway to the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, home to the famous violin-wood forest, where the Norway spruces grow whose resonance wood has been chosen by violin makers for centuries. From here the eye ranges over the imposing Pale di San Martino, a Dolomite group with steep profiles and pale rock faces, and, on the opposite side, toward the gentler ridges of the Lagorai, a porphyry range less frequented and prized by those seeking silence and untouched nature. Spruce and larch woods, clearings and streams make up a landscape that changes colour with every season, from summer green to autumn reds and golds.

What to do: skiing, hiking and the violin-wood forest

In winter Bellamonte serves as a base for the Alpe Lusia ski area, with runs winding through conifer woods and open slopes suited to families and more experienced skiers alike, plus routes for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. In the warmer months the village becomes a starting point for hiking and mountain biking toward Passo Rolle, the Paneveggio Park and the trails that wind into the violin-wood forest, where information panels tell the centuries-old story linking these woods to violin making. There are also easier walks among meadows and mountain huts, suitable for visitors of every age, and viewpoints from which to admire the Pale di San Martino.

Flavours and traditions of Val di Fiemme

The cuisine found in Bellamonte and the nearby farmsteads is rooted in the peasant tradition of Val di Fiemme: canederli dumplings in broth or melted butter, polenta paired with alpine-pasture cheeses, porcini mushrooms gathered in the surrounding woods, and game cooked according to recipes handed down through generations. Local cheeses, made in small alpine dairies, and desserts based on wild berries round out a genuine gastronomic offering, often served in mountain huts and refuges that in winter become a warm stop after a day of skiing and in summer a resting point along the trails.
