的故事

History and origins

The territory of Volpago was already frequented in Roman times, but its agricultural development is tied above all to Benedictine monks, who from the year 1000 settled on the Montello and played a decisive role in cultivating the vine and turning forest into productive land, a process later continued under the Republic of Venice. In the twentieth century the town was deeply marked by the First World War: the Montello became a front line along the Piave and was the setting for brutal fighting, culminating in the Battle of the Solstice in June 1918.

What to see

The town preserves churches of ancient origin and several Venetian villas scattered among its hamlets, evidence of a farming territory that over the centuries also attracted Venetian nobility in search of country residences. On the Montello, along the forest trails, trenches and walkways from the First World War can still be found today, telling the military history of this hill in a direct way.

Nature and surroundings

The Montello is a unique wooded plateau, covered in black locust and oak forest and crossed by a dense network of gravel roads much loved by cyclists and hikers. The landscape alternates woodland with stretches of vineyard, with views ranging from the Treviso Prealps to the plain, while not far away flows the Piave, a river symbolic of twentieth-century Veneto history.

Food, wine and local products

Volpago falls within the Montello wine-growing area, known above all for its red wines, while just to the north stretch the hills of the Asolo Prosecco DOCG. The area's wineries, many family-run, offer tastings and vineyard visits in a setting far less crowded than the more famous Valdobbiadene Prosecco hills.

Events and traditions

The local calendar includes village fairs and events dedicated to the memory of the First World War, with ceremonies and guided walks through the sites of the Battle of the Solstice, particularly felt in a territory that still bears the marks of those years.

How to get there and location

Volpago del Montello lies about fifteen kilometers northwest of Treviso, on the southern side of the Montello. It is easily reached by car from the city and makes a convenient starting point for exploring both the Montello and the nearby Asolo hills.

Local life and economy

The local economy rests on agriculture, viticulture and a fabric of small craft businesses, in a town that remains mostly residential and agricultural in character while still benefiting from its proximity to Treviso and the industrial centers of the Marca Trevigiana.

Experiences not to miss

  • Cycle or walk the gravel roads of the Montello
  • Visit a local winery and taste Montello wines
  • Follow the historic trails of the Battle of the Solstice
  • Admire a Venetian villa in one of the town's hamlets
