的故事

History and origins

The town was born from a hydraulic engineering project: in the 17th century the Republic of Venice decided to carry out an artificial cut of the Po river to keep away from the lagoon the huge quantity of sediment threatening to silt it up, giving rise to the place name and the settlement that followed. From that moment, the history of Taglio di Po has been intertwined with that of the great land reclamations of Polesine, a centuries-long effort to regulate the waters that turned marshland into farmland and made agricultural development possible across the entire lower Po area.

What to see

Among the buildings of greatest interest are the 19th-century Church of San Francesco, in the town centre, and the smaller Church of San Basilio in the hamlet of Ca' Vendramin. In the locality of Cà Zen stands Villa Zeno, a historic residence that also passed through the hands of Lord Byron's family. Worth a visit is the Land Reclamation Museum of Ca' Vendramin, housed in a former pumping station no longer in use, which tells, through original machinery and documents, the story of the reclamation of Polesine and the centuries-old relationship between this land and water.

Nature and surroundings

Taglio di Po is part of the Veneto Regional Po Delta Park, one of Europe's richest environmental systems in terms of biodiversity, home to herons, egrets and numerous species of migratory birds. The municipal territory, crossed by embankments and reclamation canals, lends itself to cycling excursions along the levee roads and boat trips along the branches of the river, experiences that let visitors appreciate up close the balance between human intervention and the natural environment that characterises the whole Delta.

Food, wine and local products

The cuisine of Taglio di Po reflects the dual soul of land and water that defines Polesine: river and lagoon fish, eel above all, is served alongside rice-based dishes, rice being grown in the local paddies, and vegetables from gardens irrigated by the network of canals. Products of the plains agriculture are also present, from maize to fodder crops, which also support widespread livestock farming, while village festivals remain the best occasion to sample the traditional recipes of the lower Polesine.

How to get there and location

The town lies in the eastern part of the province of Rovigo, along the course of the Po, in an area reachable by car via the Romea road or the provincial roads that cross the Delta. The nearest railway stations are in Adria and Rovigo, while moving around within the park is often best done by car or bicycle, given the elongated shape of the territory along the river embankments. Its position, away from the main communication routes, makes it a destination for those seeking a slower journey, paced by the rhythm of the river.
