The morainic hills and the wine landscape
Sommacampagna's territory forms part of the Garda morainic amphitheatre, a system of low, rounded hills created during the last ice ages, when an ancient glacier carved out the lake basin, pushing huge amounts of debris ahead of it. The result is a gentle landscape dotted with vineyards, cypress trees and farmhouses, quite different from both the Verona plain and the mountains further north. Driving the country roads between Sommacampagna, Custoza and Sona means crossing one of the most photogenic wine territories of western Veneto, particularly striking in autumn when the vineyard colours change.
Custoza and its Bianco di Custoza DOC wine
The hamlet of Custoza lends its name to one of the most appreciated white wines of the Verona area, Bianco di Custoza DOC, made from a blend of Garganega, Trebbianello, Cortese and other local grapes, produced by the many family-run wineries scattered across the surrounding hills. It is a fresh, versatile wine, often paired with lake fish dishes or traditional Verona cuisine, and stands alongside Bardolino as one of the signature products of this hilly strip between Verona and Lake Garda. Many wineries offer tastings and visits, often with views over the hills, a real opportunity to understand local wine production without travelling all the way to the busier lakeside towns.
The Custoza Ossuary and Risorgimento memory
Custoza was the site of two decisive battles of the Italian Risorgimento, in 1848 and 1866, which saw first the Piedmontese army and later that of the Kingdom of Italy clash with Austrian forces in one of the key episodes of national unification. The Custoza Ossuary, built in the late nineteenth century on a hill overlooking the surrounding landscape, holds the remains of more than two thousand soldiers who fell in the two battles and is among the most significant Risorgimento memorials in Italy. Its tower also offers one of the best viewpoints in the area, with views stretching from the morainic hills to the Verona plain and, on clear days, toward the Prealps.
Near the fairground and airport: a logistics role
Sommacampagna borders the area of Verona's Valerio Catullo airport and is not far from Veronafiere, one of Italy's main exhibition centres, which has driven the growth of hotels, restaurants and accommodation geared toward business or transit travel rather than genuine leisure stays. It should be said plainly: for anyone looking purely for scenic relaxation, this proximity also brings commercial zones and noticeable traffic along the main roads. At the same time, it is a practical advantage for travellers flying to or from Verona who still want to sleep somewhere greener and quieter than the city centre or the areas right next to the airport.
Sommacampagna's centre and its hamlets
The main town has a simple layout, with the parish church and a few rural courtyards reflecting the town's agricultural history, while the hamlets of Custoza, Caselle and San Rocco di Piegara retain more of a rural character, with farmhouses and small agricultural businesses. It is not an old town of great monumental interest, but its main function for visitors remains that of a starting point for exploring the hills, the wineries and the Risorgimento memorial sites, as well as a practical base for anyone travelling between Verona, Lake Garda and the fairground.
