的故事

Volcanic hills between Lessini and the Alpone valley

The territory of Roncà extends over the eastern spurs of the Lessini Mountains, in a landscape of volcanic origin that millions of years ago lay beneath a tropical sea, later transformed by intense eruptive activity. This geological origin left basaltic and tuff soils particularly suited to viticulture, along with an underground rich in fossil evidence unique in the world. The hills of Roncà, with their terraced vineyards, offer panoramic views over the Alpone valley and, on clearer days, over the Verona plain below. It is a landscape that clearly tells the millennia-long geological history of this part of the Veneto, today turned into a productive and well-ordered farming territory.

The wine: Soave and Durello

Roncà lies within the production area of Soave and, above all, of Lessini Durello, a sparkling wine made from the native grape of the same name, appreciated for its marked acidity and its suitability for ageing using the classic method. Local wineries, often family-run, offer tastings that let visitors discover up close a wine less famous than the Veneto's big names but of growing interest among enthusiasts. The terraced vineyards on the volcanic hills create a neat, well-tended landscape, and walking or cycling through them during the grape harvest is one of the best ways to understand the close bond between Roncà's territory and its winemaking vocation.

Cherries and local fruit growing

Alongside the vine, another traditional crop marks the hills of Roncà: the cherry tree. In spring, blossoming cherry orchards colour the slopes, while in the following months the cherry harvest becomes an occasion for small village festivals and local markets, moments when the community celebrates a product tied for generations to the municipality's farming economy. This fruit growing, often practised on a small scale and with traditional methods, stands alongside wine production as further evidence of the territory's hillside farming vocation, in a balance between crops that has endured despite the transformations of Veneto agriculture.

Near the Bolca fossil site

A short distance from Roncà, in the hilly area of eastern Lessinia, lies the famous Pesciara di Bolca, one of the world's most important fossil sites for the exceptional preservation of fish, plants and other organisms dating back some 50 million years. Although not within Roncà's municipal boundaries, the site is reachable with a short trip and represents a natural complement to a visit to the territory, which shares the same volcanic geological origin as Bolca. For those in Roncà for the wine or the countryside, a stop at the fossil area offers a fascinating scientific perspective on the ancient history of these hills.

Trails among the hills of the Alpone valley

Beyond viticulture, the territory of Roncà offers a decent network of trails crossing the volcanic hills and woods of eastern Lessinia, with routes suited both to short walks among the vineyards and longer hikes towards the nearby hills. Walking among the vine rows, especially during the grape harvest, allows visitors to observe winegrowers at work and enjoy panoramic views over the Alpone valley. In some spots, rocky outcrops reveal the volcanic nature of the soil, offering points of interest even for non-specialists simply observing the landscape with a curious eye.
