Pontelongo 的故事
The village on a bend of the Bacchiglione
Pontelongo developed around a bend of the Bacchiglione river, a geographical feature that has shaped its history since its origins, when the waterway was a key route for trade and communication in the Bassa Padovana. The municipal territory belongs to the Saccisica, the rural area between Padua, Piove di Sacco and the southern Venice lagoon, historically marked by the reclamation and water-management works that turned once-marshy land into farmland. The modestly sized village centre faces the river with a simple, functional layout that reflects the village's dual identity: tied on one hand to agriculture, and on the other to the river and the trade once carried along it.
The sugar refinery that changed the village
Pontelongo's real economic turning point came on 26 June 1910, when the sugar refinery was built on a bend of the Bacchiglione, financed largely with Belgian capital, so much so that residents habitually called it 'el Beljo'. The plant radically transformed the local economy, until then based on farming and river trade, becoming for over a century the village's main source of employment and tying Pontelongo's name to the Veneto sugar-beet supply chain, today run by the Coprob cooperative. The plant, which has lived through more than a hundred years of industrial history, still represents, despite the sector's recent difficulties linked to climate change, an extremely strong element of identity for the Pontelongo community.
Between fields and river: a dual economy
Beyond the sugar refinery, Pontelongo's economy remains deeply tied to the farming of the Bassa Padovana, with cereal and vegetable crops occupying much of the municipal territory in a flat landscape typical of the Saccisica. The Bacchiglione river continues to shape the landscape, offering embankments to walk or cycle along and a valuable natural feature within an otherwise heavily farmed setting. This combination of cultivated countryside, industrial memory and river presence makes Pontelongo an interesting example of how small municipalities in the Veneto lowlands managed, over the course of the 20th century, to pair traditional farming with a larger-scale productive activity.
In the heart of the Saccisica
Pontelongo's position, in the eastern part of the province of Padua, makes it an intermediate reference point between the provincial capital, Piove di Sacco and the southern Venice lagoon, in an area that shares history, farming landscape and traditions with the neighbouring Saccisica municipalities. Anyone cycling the routes along the Bacchiglione or exploring the network of canals and embankments of the lower Padua plain will find Pontelongo a natural stop, also useful as a starting point toward Chioggia and the coast. It is not a village built for tourism, but its geographical position still makes it a functional waypoint for those wanting to get to know this lesser-known part of Veneto.
Pontelongo today, between memory and the future
With the seasonal suspension of the sugar-beet campaign announced for 2026, Pontelongo's refinery, a century-old plant and the last one left in the whole Veneto region, finds itself at a crossroads directly affecting hundreds of jobs and an entire local agricultural supply chain. It is a delicate moment for the community, which watches with concern the fate of an activity considered an integral part of its identity for over a century. Beyond this uncertainty, Pontelongo remains a living village, rooted in its farming and industrial history, where daily life continues to flow between the fields, the river and the memory of a productive past that has deeply marked several generations of residents.
