Sover Between the Valle di Cembra and the Val di Fiemme
Sover stands at over 830 metres of altitude on a plateau that acts as a hinge between the Valle di Cembra, the porphyry valley carved by the Avisio torrent, and the Val di Fiemme, with which the municipality shares part of its geographical identity while remaining administratively part of the Comunità della Valle di Cembra, together with Albiano, Cembra Lisignago, Giovo, Lona-Lases and Segonzano. The municipal territory borders both communes of the Valle di Cembra, such as Segonzano, Lona-Lases and Altavalle, and communes of the Val di Fiemme, such as Capriana and Valfloriana, as well as Bedollo, on the Altopiano di Pinè. This border position between two valleys and two distinct alpine identities makes Sover a privileged vantage point, suspended between the cultivated valley floor and the first buttresses of the Lagorai, and turns it into a less travelled but genuine stop for those wishing to discover central Trentino away from the main tourist flows.
The Woods, the Views and Sover's Outdoor Character
The defining trait of Sover is its sylvo-pastoral character: most of the municipal territory is covered by coniferous and broadleaf woods, alternating with pastures and small cultivated plots around the hamlets. From the main village, gathered around the church of San Lorenzo, the eye sweeps across a wide panorama facing the western slope of Monte Frattoni, with views that embrace the valley below and the surrounding mountains. This woodland vocation has also shaped the village's architecture, with rustic houses adorned with sacred frescoes and roofs of coloured tiles from the historic kilns of Molina di Fiemme, evidence of a woodworking tradition dating back to the seventeenth century. It is no coincidence that Sover is today a reference point for those seeking quiet outdoor tourism, made of walks in the woods, fresh high-altitude air and a pace of life far from the fashionable buzz of the region's better-known resorts.
The Valley's Porphyry and the Hamlets of Sover
Sover belongs to the left bank of the Valle di Cembra, the Comunità known worldwide for porphyry quarrying, the reddish volcanic rock that paves squares and clads facades across half of Europe and that here emerges from a substratum of rhyolites formed around 270 million years ago. Unlike the neighbouring municipalities of Albiano and Lases, where porphyry quarries still shape the landscape and the economy today, the territory of Sover never developed its own quarrying activity, remaining true to a more agricultural and forestry-based character. The municipality is made up of eight hamlets scattered across the slope, including Piscine, set on a green terrace, and Montesover, a small alpine hamlet known for raspberry and mushroom picking, alongside Facendi, Montalto, Piazzoli, Settefontane, Slosseri and Sveseri: a mosaic of small villages that keeps a rural identity distinct from the stone-working centres of the valley.
The Trails, the Woods of the Lagorai and Sover's Nature
From Montesover a forest road climbs toward Malga Vernera, the starting point for numerous trails that lead into the heart of the Lagorai, the chain of dark, wild mountains that stretches south of the Val di Fiemme, through woods of Norway spruce and stretches of blueberry bushes. The municipal territory is also crossed by small streams, such as the one flowing down into the Rio delle Bore valley, and by areas of naturalistic interest such as the Lavini di Croce, often intermediate stops on longer walks toward the high-altitude pastures. Walking among the hamlets, clearings alternate with dense woods and small panoramic plateaus, in a landscape that gradually changes altitude and keeps a wild character even a short distance from the main village. It is a territory suited to a quiet hike rather than sporting performance, ideal for those seeking direct contact with Trentino's lesser-known mountains.
History and Experiences in Sover
The history of Sover is also told by its municipal coat of arms, a mountain with three peaks surmounted by a red gridiron, symbol of the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, patron saint of the village, flanked by two laurel branches recalling the clashes fought by local militias against Napoleonic troops. In the main village, the church of San Lorenzo houses three baroque wooden altars, while the hamlets are home to the church of San Leonardo in Montesover and that of Santa Barbara in Piscine, evidence of a devotion spread widely across the territory. Today the life of the village still revolves around seasonal rhythms, from mushroom and raspberry picking in autumn to summer walks toward the Lagorai, while the proximity of the Piramidi di Segonzano, in the neighbouring municipality of Segonzano, offers the chance for a half-day excursion combining geology and the landscape of the Valle di Cembra.
