Pienza stands on a hill in the province of Siena, within the Val d'Orcia, one of the most celebrated rural areas of southern Tuscany. It is not overlooking the sea nor crossed by large rivers: its landscape is made up of ridges, badlands, and gentle undulations cultivated with wheat and vineyards. The elevated position offers wide views of the surrounding valley, while the proximity to other historic villages in the area makes the municipality a convenient starting point for exploring the Sienese hinterland by car or bicycle.
History and origins
