Barberino Tavarnelle lies in the heart of the Florentine Chianti, south of Florence, along the ridge separating the Elsa valley from the Pesa valley. This administratively recent municipality brings together two distinct historic centres that share the same landscape of vine-covered and olive-planted hills. Near Barberino once stood the ancient Semifonte, a powerful fortified town destroyed by the Florentines in 1202; a small dome-shaped monument, built in the twentieth century, still commemorates the vanished settlement.
