Mount Penteli and Penteli's location
Penteli occupies the south-western slopes of Mount Penteli, the marble and limestone mountain rising about 18 kilometres north-east of central Athens, between the municipalities of Chalandri, Melissia and Dionysos. At 1,109 metres, Mount Penteli is one of the four ranges enclosing the Attica basin, together with Hymettus, Parnitha and Aigaleo. Its elevated position above the Athenian plain gives Penteli a milder summer microclimate and sweeping views over the city, the distant Acropolis and the Saronic Gulf. This location made the municipality a retreat destination as early as the start of the twentieth century, when wealthy Athenian families began building summer residences here, giving rise to the elegant character that still defines the town today.
Pentelic marble and the building of the Parthenon
The southern flank of Mount Penteli holds the quarries from which, starting in the 5th century BC, the celebrated Pentelic marble was extracted: a fine-grained white stone that develops a warm golden patina over time thanks to its iron oxide content. This marble was used to build the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and most of the monuments on the Acropolis of Athens, as well as countless classical sculptures now held in museums around the world. The quarries, some still visible along the paths climbing from the town toward the summit, offer direct evidence of the extraction and transport techniques used by ancient stonemasons, who moved the blocks to Athens along a purpose-built route.
