Schiavon and the Brenta plain

Schiavon lies on the Vicenza plain, not far from the course of the Brenta river, in a predominantly agricultural territory between Bassano del Grappa and Vicenza. The municipality comprises the main town and the hamlet of Longa di Schiavon, home to the area's chief historical and architectural point of interest. The landscape is typical of the central Veneto plain: cultivated fields, rural farmsteads and a network of small country roads linking the settlements. It is not a territory marked by major tourist flows, but the presence of an important Veneto villa and its proximity to the Brenta make it an interesting stop for anyone wanting to discover an authentic corner of the Vicenza countryside, away from the better-known routes.

Villa Chiericati, later Villa Lambert

In the hamlet of Longa di Schiavon stands the municipality's most significant building: Villa Chiericati, known today as Villa Lambert. Its origins date back to the 16th century, the golden age of the Veneto villa, but its present appearance is largely the result of a thorough 19th-century intervention. At the end of the 1800s, the architect Caregaro Negrin redesigned the building's façade, giving it the late-neoclassical forms that still characterise it today, transforming what had been a 16th-century villa into a residence with a 19th-century taste. It is an interesting example of how many Veneto residences passed through centuries of transformation, layering different eras and styles beneath a single façade.

Jacopo Cabianca's English-style park

No less important than the architectural body is the vast park surrounding Villa Lambert, laid out in English style to a design by Jacopo Cabianca. Unlike formal Italian-style gardens, the English-style park favours a naturalistic layout, with trees arranged in an apparently spontaneous way, clearings and views designed to accompany visitors through a succession of green backdrops. This type of park, very fashionable between the 19th and early 20th centuries in the noble residences of the Veneto, testifies to the romantic taste that accompanied the villa's 19th-century transformation, and remains today a landscape feature of great value for the whole area of Longa di Schiavon.

From the Chiericati to the Lambert family: a 20th-century restoration

The name by which the villa is known today, Villa Lambert, comes from the family who carried out an important restoration between 1965 and 1970, returning the building and park to a good state of preservation after decades of use and transformation. This change of ownership and care fits into a story common to many Veneto villas, often passed from their original noble families to new owners who, in modern times, ensured their survival through targeted restoration work. The villa remains private property today, but its historical and architectural value makes it one of the most cited landmarks when discussing the heritage of Veneto villas in the area between Vicenza and Bassano del Grappa.

A farming municipality between the Brenta and the Vicenza plain

Beyond the villa, Schiavon is a modestly sized municipality, whose economy remains tied to agriculture and the small craft activities typical of the Vicenza plain. There are no major tourist attractions besides Villa Lambert, and it is worth being honest about that: this is a territory to experience unhurriedly, better suited to those seeking direct contact with the countryside than to those looking for a structured tourist offer. Its proximity to the Brenta and to the cycling routes of the Veneto plain nonetheless makes it a pleasant stop for those travelling between Vicenza and Bassano del Grappa, perhaps as part of a wider itinerary dedicated to the Veneto villas of the area.
