A plateau in the heart of Lessinia
The territory of Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo occupies a karst plateau in western Lessinia, marked by sinkholes, caves, valleys carved into limestone, and beech and hornbeam woods alternating with high pastures. It is a gentle mountain landscape, without towering peaks but rich in geological phenomena that tell millions of years of the earth's history: Lessinia was once a tropical seabed, as shown by the numerous fossils found in the area. The farming landscape is still tied to livestock raising and the production of mountain-hut cheese, while the small villages built of local stone keep a sober architecture, consistent with the surrounding mountain environment.
The Ponte di Veja
The Ponte di Veja is one of the most spectacular karst features in the Veneto: an enormous natural arch of limestone rock, dozens of metres high, formed by the partial collapse of the vault of an ancient cave carved by water over millennia. Its scale impressed historians and naturalists as early as the eighteenth century, when it was among the first natural phenomena of Lessinia to be described and drawn with scientific attention. Today the Ponte di Veja is reached by a short walk and is one of the area's landmark sites, a destination for hikers, photographers and families visiting western Lessinia. Nearby are other caves and cavities that complete the area's karst landscape.
The Paleontological and Prehistoric Museum
Inaugurated in 1998, the Museo Paleontologico e Preistorico of Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo tells the geological and human history of the area through fossil remains and prehistoric artefacts from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Iron Age. The most extraordinary piece in the collection is the fossil skeleton of a Cretodus shark about two metres long, found together with the remains of a sea turtle, probably its last meal: one of the most complete fossils of this kind ever found anywhere in the world. Many of the exhibited materials come precisely from the Ponte di Veja and Monte Loffa, and by reservation it is possible to join guided tours linking the museum to the sites where the fossils were found, to better understand how this extraordinary palaeontological heritage came to be.
The stone of Lessinia
The Pietra della Lessinia, or lastame, is the local limestone that for centuries was quarried and worked by the inhabitants of Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo and neighbouring towns, used to pave roads, cover roofs and build dry-stone walls. It is precisely in this rock that the numerous marine fossils displayed in the municipal museum are found, a sign that quarrying and palaeontology are closely linked in the area's history. Historic quarries and traditional stone-working methods can still be observed today, evidence of a craft that shaped not only the landscape but also the economy and traditional architecture of this part of Lessinia.
Hiking and mountain life
The territory of Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo offers a dense network of hiking trails crossing woods, pastures and karst valleys, suited both to experienced walkers and to families looking for simpler routes. The local economy remains tied to livestock farming, the production of mountain-hut cheeses and small-scale hiking tourism, without the large accommodation facilities of the Veneto's better-known mountain destinations. It is a municipality that still lives by the rhythm of the seasons, with mountain huts open in the summer months and an authentic atmosphere that attracts above all those seeking direct contact with the nature of Lessinia, away from mass tourism.
