Historia

Historia e Pove Del Grappa

The Conca degli Olivi

Pove del Grappa owes its nickname, Conca degli Olivi, to the shape of its territory: a natural amphitheatre at the foot of the Grappa Massif which, sheltering the area from cold winds and retaining heat, creates an unusually mild microclimate for a foothill area, favourable to olive cultivation. It is a particular situation that allows this corner of Veneto to produce quality extra virgin olive oil in a climatic context that, just a few kilometres away, would not otherwise allow it. The resulting landscape, made of terraces and olive groves climbing the hillsides, is today one of the village's most recognisable features.

The Olio Veneto del Grappa DOP

The oil produced in Pove del Grappa and the neighbouring foothill municipalities falls under the Olio Veneto del Grappa designation, which received Protected Designation of Origin status in 2001, a recognition certifying its quality and its link to this specific territory. Over the years local production has repeatedly stood out in the main national competitions dedicated to extra virgin olive oil, a significant achievement for such a small area. Pove's olive-growing tradition is so deeply rooted that it is celebrated every year, on Palm Sunday, with the Fiera Mercato dell'Olivo, an occasion when local oil mills offer tastings and direct sale of the freshly pressed product.

At the foot of the Grappa Massif

The location of Pove del Grappa, right at the foot of the Massif, makes it a natural base for those wishing to explore the mountain that gives its name to the village and to many municipalities in the area. The Grappa Massif offers a dense network of hiking trails and military roads, as well as crags and valleys used by climbing and more demanding hiking enthusiasts, spread along the whole range from the Valsugana to the Valle di Schievenin. It is a mountain well suited to active, outdoor tourism, complementing the farming life and olive production that characterise the valley floor and the first hills around Pove.

A mountain sacred to memory

The Grappa Massif is not just a place of nature and hiking: it is also a territory deeply marked by the First World War, when it became one of the bloodiest fronts between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies, so much so that it is still referred to today as the Monte Sacro alla Patria, the mountain sacred to the nation. Military cemeteries, tunnels, trenches and memorials dot the mountain, forming a historical heritage shared by all the foothill municipalities, including Pove del Grappa. For visitors to the area, combining a nature hike with a visit to these sites of memory means fully grasping the mountain's dual character, between scenic beauty and recent history.

A short distance from Bassano del Grappa

Its proximity to Bassano del Grappa, one of the best-known towns in the Veneto foothills, makes Pove del Grappa a convenient, quiet base for visiting the area without staying in the heart of the more touristic town. From Pove it takes just a few minutes to reach Bassano's historic centre, with its famous Ponte degli Alpini, while keeping one's stay in a more intimate setting linked to farming life. It is a combination that allows visitors to alternate between exploring a centre of art and culture like Bassano and slower moments dedicated to the olive groves and trails of the Massif, without having to choose between the two souls of the foothills.
