The story

The story of Montegrotto Terme

Europe's Largest Thermal Basin

Montegrotto Terme, together with Abano Terme, forms the continent's leading thermal district in terms of size and capacity. Rainwater falling on the Asiago plateau and the Vicenza Prealps seeps underground, travels a long subterranean route lasting decades, and re-emerges here at high temperatures, laden with minerals recognised for their therapeutic properties in treating rheumatic, respiratory and motor conditions. Spa hotels, rehabilitation centres and facilities specialising in mud therapy have for over a century formed the economic backbone of the town, drawing Italian and foreign visitors in search of wellness and thermal treatments.

The Roman Baths and the Archaeological Park

Long before the modern spa establishments, the Romans had identified this area as a place of water worship and treatment, building an extensive thermal complex of which important remains are still visible today in the archaeological area along Via Neroniana. Pools, wall structures and remains of public buildings testify to the site's importance in the imperial era, when the fame of its healing waters drew visitors from across the empire. The thermal archaeological park, developed around these finds, allows visitors to trace, in concrete terms, two thousand years of continuous use of these springs.

The Laghetto della Costa and the Pile-Dwelling Villages

Just outside the spa centre lies the Laghetto della Costa, a small thermal-origin lake that has yielded the remains of one of the most significant prehistoric pile-dwelling villages in the Euganean area, with evidence dating back to the Bronze Age. The site, of considerable scientific interest, fits into the wider picture of prehistoric pile-dwelling sites across the Alpine region, and offers a key to understanding just how long this territory, thanks to its water and natural resources, attracted human settlement long before Roman times.

At the Foot of the Euganean Hills

Montegrotto sits at the south-eastern edge of the Euganean Hills, a group of volcanic rises standing isolated in the Veneto plain, today protected as a Regional Park. Trails and excursions set off from the spa centre into the surrounding hills, among vineyards, olive groves and woodland, offering a natural counterpoint to the more urban, hospitality-driven character of the spa district. This proximity also makes Montegrotto a practical base for exploring the wider Euganean area, among small hamlets, historic villas and local produce such as wine and olive oil.

A Town Built Around Wellness

Montegrotto Terme's urban layout clearly reflects its purpose: large spa hotels with parks and pools, aesthetic and physiotherapy centres, and an accommodation offer designed for extended therapeutic stays as much as for short relaxing breaks. It is a town with an unhurried pace, built for health and rest rather than for frenetic sightseeing, where days are structured around thermal treatments, walks in hotel parks and short excursions into the surrounding Euganean countryside.
