The Bassa Veronese and the reclaimed landscape
The territory of Casaleone forms part of the Bassa Veronese, a plain that until the nineteenth century was largely subject to seasonal flooding. Land-reclamation works, carried out with drainage canals and pumping stations, brought the water under control and returned vast areas to cultivation, shaping the grid of square fields and canals that still defines the landscape today.
Rice, tobacco and the crops of the plain
Among the area's historic crops are rice, favoured by the damp soils of the reclaimed land, and tobacco, grown in this part of the province of Verona for much of the twentieth century. Today the fields around Casaleone are given over mainly to maize, soy, wheat and forage crops, in an intensive style of farming typical of the low Po plain.
The town centre and rural life
The main settlement retains a simple layout, organised around the parish church and the main streets that once served the local agricultural market. The rural farmsteads scattered across the countryside, with their barns and outbuildings, still bear witness to the way of rural life in the low Veronese plain.
Between Verona and the province of Mantua
Casaleone lies in the southern part of the province of Verona, not far from the border with the province of Mantua, in a transitional area between the Veronese and Mantuan plains. Its position makes it a point of passage for those travelling the minor roads of the Bassa toward the Po.
