Ossana at the Entrance to the Val di Peio, in the Val di Sole
Ossana lies in the Val di Sole, in western Trentino, at the point where the main valley meets the entrance to the Val di Peio, the side valley that climbs toward the Stelvio National Park and the glaciers of the Ortles-Cevedale group. The village stands on a sun-facing terrace at the foot of the Presanella massif, at just over 1,000 metres above sea level, in a position that for centuries made it an obligatory crossroads for those travelling up the valley toward the Alpine passes or heading to Peio and its thermal baths. The settlement, home to a few hundred residents, has preserved the layout of an ancient mountain village, with narrow lanes, stone houses and porticoes clustered around the main square. This authentic identity was officially recognised in 2021, when Ossana joined the Borghi più belli d'Italia circuit, a label that rewards the country's best-preserved historic centres and has helped make the village known well beyond the borders of the Val di Sole.
The Castle of San Michele, Sentinel of the Valley
The landmark monument of Ossana is the Castle of San Michele, built on a rocky spur overlooking the village and the whole Val di Sole. Its origins probably date to the Lombard period, when the outcrop hosted an outpost controlling the Alpine transit routes; between the 8th and 11th centuries a church dedicated to San Michele was built there, while between the 12th and 14th centuries the Prince-Bishopric of Trento erected a palace and a curia for administering and collecting the valley's taxes. In the 15th century the Lombard Federici family carried out major fortification works, bringing the castle to its greatest splendour, with a double ring of walls, a defensive rounded bastion and the romanesque tower, around 25 metres tall, still dominating the village's skyline today. After centuries of military decline and a fire in 1777 that marked its abandonment, the stronghold became property of the Autonomous Province of Trento in 1992, which carried out a restoration completed in 2014 and now makes it open to visitors, with routes through walls, courtyards and the small chapel.
The Borgo dei Presepi and Christmas Traditions
Ossana is known throughout Trentino as the Borgo dei Presepi, the Village of Nativity Scenes, an event that every year, from late November to Epiphany, turns the streets of the historic centre into a widespread Christmas trail. Hundreds of nativity scenes, made by the villagers using the most varied techniques and materials, from wood to stone, from ceramics to reclaimed materials, are set up in niches, courtyards, barns and windowsills throughout the village, creating an intimate atmosphere that draws visitors from outside the valley. The event is rooted in the popular devotion linked to the Church of San Vigilio, the parish church at the heart of the village, whose first construction works date back to 1180, making it one of the oldest in the upper Val di Sole, home to fine marble and wooden altars. Alongside the Borgo dei Presepi, Ossana keeps other seasonal traditions alive, such as the Fera dei Sét and the Fiera di San Michele in September, occasions when the village comes alive with markets, local produce and community moments tied to the rhythm of the mountain seasons.
The Parks, the Noce and Nature Between Stelvio and Adamello-Brenta
The territory of Ossana enjoys a privileged position between two of the most important protected area systems in the Italian Alps: the Stelvio National Park, which opens up just above the village along the Val di Peio, and the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, which extends on the opposite side of the Val di Sole. This proximity makes Ossana an ideal starting point for excursions into a variety of environments, from coniferous woods to high-altitude grasslands, up to the glaciers of the Ortles-Cevedale group and the peaks of the Brenta. The village is also crossed by the Noce torrent, which rises not far from the area's glaciers and rushes down toward the valley floor, feeding some of the most popular rafting and canyoning stretches in Trentino. Ossana's sky, largely unaffected by light pollution, has earned recognition for the quality of its astronomical observation, to the point of being listed among the ideal stargazing destinations in Trentino, a further reason for those seeking authentic contact with the mountains in every season.
History, Skiing and Experiences in the Val di Sole
The history of Ossana is marked by the strategic role that the Castle of San Michele played for centuries along the communication routes of the upper Val di Sole, first as a control outpost and later as an administrative centre of the Prince-Bishopric of Trento. This hinge role between the valley floor and the side valleys is still reflected today in the village's economy, which combines tourism, mountain agriculture and craftsmanship. In winter, Ossana is a convenient base for reaching the Folgarida-Marilleva and Passo del Tonale ski areas, while in summer it offers hikes, walks among the hamlets and the discovery of local products, first among them the Casolét della Val di Sole, a raw-milk cheese recognised as a Slow Food Presidium for its delicate flavour. Between a visit to the castle, a winter stroll through the village of nativity scenes and summer trails toward the parks, Ossana offers a complete experience of the Val di Sole, able to combine historical memory and everyday mountain life.
