A village suspended on the Deutschnonsberg
Lauregno rises on a sunny balcony of the upper Val di Non, an area known as the Deutschnonsberg because, unlike the rest of the valley in Trentino, it belongs administratively to the province of Bolzano and is German-speaking. Together with the neighboring municipalities of Proves and Senale-San Felice, it forms this small South Tyrolean enclave set among the mountains, reached via scenic mountain roads climbing up from the Adige valley floor or from the Trentino side of Val di Non.
History and German-speaking identity
The community of Lauregno has maintained a strong German language and cultural identity for centuries, the result of ancient settlements that tied the upper Val di Non to the Tyrolean world rather than to the surrounding Trentino-Italian one. This linguistic peculiarity, unique within Val di Non, is still reflected today in local customs, surnames, rural architecture and the village's bilingual place names, and Lauregno remains one of the smallest and most isolated municipalities in all of South Tyrol.
