Cavizzana sits on a south-facing slope above the Noce river, at the point where Val di Sole opens toward Val di Non. Its panoramic position offers wide views over the valley floor and surrounding slopes, while the houses clustered around the historic core retain the sober character of Trentino's mountain villages. Being among the region's least populous municipalities does not diminish Cavizzana's role as a small rural outpost, an ideal starting point for exploring the valley at a slower pace, away from the busiest tourist routes.
History and origins of the village
Cavizzana's origins are rooted in the long agricultural history of Val di Sole, shaped for centuries by mountain farming, animal husbandry and a close relationship with the surrounding land. Like many small villages of the Sole valley, it passed through the various rulers that governed the whole area, from the Prince-Bishopric of Trento to annexation by the Kingdom of Italy, yet it kept a rural character that remains largely intact today. The cuisine of the Sole valley reflects the farming vocation of villages like Cavizzana: apples grown on the surrounding slopes, alpine dairy cheeses, mountain cured meats and dishes based on potatoes and maize flour, staples of the valley's traditional peasant diet.
