A Ladin village in upper Val di Fassa
Campitello di Fassa, known in the local Ladin language as Ciampedel, lies in the upper Val di Fassa, one of the most striking valleys in Trentino, set among some of the most celebrated peaks of the Dolomites. The village stretches along the valley floor, at the foot of rock walls that rise steeply above the roofs and bell towers typical of Ladin architecture. Together with Canazei, Mazzin, Pozza di Fassa, Vigo di Fassa and Moena, Campitello belongs to the group of municipalities that share the Ladin language and culture, a linguistic and cultural heritage that has survived for centuries in these alpine valleys. Walking through the centre, visitors still find traditional houses, small churches and traces of a mountain community deeply rooted in its origins, even though it is today a renowned international tourist destination.
The Sella, the Sassolungo and the UNESCO Dolomites
Campitello di Fassa enjoys a privileged position at the foot of two of the most imposing massifs in the Dolomites: the Sella group, with its distinctive rocky plateau surrounded by vertical walls, and the unmistakable spires of the Sassolungo, standing out sharply against the sky. These mountains are part of the Dolomites site, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage property for its extraordinary geological and scenic value. From the village, the view stretches across ridges, towers and rock faces that have made this corner of the Alps famous worldwide, a destination for mountaineers, photographers and nature lovers. The proximity to these peaks makes Campitello an ideal starting point for hikes, climbs and simple panoramic walks, with views that change colour throughout the day, from dawn to the famous enrosadira glow at sunset.
Col Rodella and the Sella Ronda
One of the symbols of Campitello di Fassa is the cable car that climbs from the village up to Col Rodella, at over 2,400 metres, a true panoramic balcony over the Dolomites. From here the view takes in the Sella, the Sassolungo, the Catinaccio, the Sassopiatto and, on the clearest days, even the Marmolada. Col Rodella is also one of the access points to the famous Sella Ronda circuit, the ski loop that links the four Dolomite valleys around the Sella massif, at the heart of the Dolomiti Superski area, among the largest ski networks in the world for kilometres of linked slopes. In winter, skiers of every level can complete the whole loop in a single day, while in summer the same route, free of snow, becomes a popular itinerary for hikers and mountain bikers, passing mountain huts and high-altitude trails.
The tradition of alpine guides and Ladin culture
Campitello di Fassa boasts one of the oldest mountaineering traditions in the Dolomites, having been home to some of the valley's earliest alpine guides, figures who from the nineteenth century onward accompanied the first explorers and climbers in discovering peaks that were then still unknown. This legacy continues today, passed down from generation to generation, and represents a deep element of identity for the local community. Alongside the mountains, Ladin culture remains strong in Campitello, with its own language still spoken and taught in the valley's schools, its legends tied to the Dolomites and their landscapes, and its popular traditions expressed through festivals, costumes and local events. This blend of passion for the mountains and cultural belonging makes Campitello an authentic place, where tourism coexists with a strong sense of identity and historical memory.
Skiing, mountaineering and summer hikes
Thanks to its position at the heart of the Dolomiti Superski area, Campitello di Fassa is one of the most beloved ski destinations in the Alps, with direct access to dozens of kilometres of linked slopes between Val di Fassa and the neighbouring valleys, suitable for both experienced skiers and families. In winter the village comes alive with modern lifts, ski schools and the chance to also practise ski touring and snowshoeing away from the groomed runs. In the summer season, Campitello becomes a starting point for trekking and mountaineering towards the Sella group and the Sassolungo, with trails leading to mountain huts, alpine lakes and via ferratas for more experienced hikers. Easier walks, on the other hand, allow visitors to discover alpine pastures, woods and high-altitude meadows, making Campitello a destination able to offer different mountain experiences in every season of the year.
