Introduction and location
Ponsacco lies in the province of Pisa, in Tuscany, within the Valdera area, the hilly district crossed by the Era river, a tributary of the Arno. The town sits in a strategic position between Pisa and Volterra, in a landscape halfway between the Arno plain and the Pisan hills. Well connected to the main towns of the area, Ponsacco is a medium-sized settlement that grew over time thanks to its craft and industrial vocation, while still keeping a close bond with the surrounding countryside and the rhythms of a largely agricultural territory.
History and origins
Ponsacco's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the village developed as a rural settlement linked to controlling the Valdera's communication routes and trade along the Era river. In later centuries the town followed the broader history of the Pisan territory, passing through periods of Florentine rule that shaped the whole of Tuscany. During the nineteenth and especially the twentieth century, Ponsacco underwent a deep economic transformation, shifting from a mainly agricultural centre into an important craft and industrial hub, becoming one of Tuscany's symbolic places for upholstered-furniture production.
