A capital of culture
Pistoia is a city of ancient origin, rich in history and art, which in 2017 was Italian Capital of Culture, a recognition of the value of its heritage and its vitality. Located at the foot of the Apennines, between Florence and Lucca, it was a powerful free commune in the Middle Ages and still preserves the layout and monuments of that glorious era. Long remaining on the edge of the great itineraries, it keeps intact the charm of an authentic Tuscan city, where art is discovered strolling among quiet squares, Romanesque churches and historic palaces.
Piazza del Duomo and San Zeno
The monumental heart of Pistoia is Piazza del Duomo, considered one of the most beautiful and harmonious in Italy, surrounded by buildings of great value. San Zeno Cathedral, with its Romanesque façade and portico, holds the famous Silver Altar of Saint James, an extraordinary masterpiece of goldsmithing created over two centuries. Opposite stand the Gothic Baptistery of San Giovanni, clad in white and green marble, the bell tower and the Palazzo dei Vescovi, composing a scenic ensemble of rare elegance.
The Ospedale del Ceppo and the Romanesque
One of the most famous places in Pistoia is the Ospedale del Ceppo, whose façade is adorned with an extraordinary polychrome glazed terracotta frieze, the work of the della Robbia workshop, depicting the works of mercy with vivid realism. The city is also a treasure trove of Romanesque architecture: the churches of Sant'Andrea, with Giovanni Pisano's pulpit, of San Giovanni Fuorcivitas and of San Bartolomeo in Pantano preserve sculptures and decorations of great value, witnesses to the artistic refinement Pistoia reached in the Middle Ages.
Between nurseries and mountains
The territory of Pistoia is famous worldwide for its nurseries: the plain surrounding the city is one of the largest ornamental plant districts in Europe, a sea of cultivated plants and trees supplying gardens and parks internationally. To the north, the Pistoia Mountains offer woods, villages, trails and the ski resorts of Abetone, among the best known in the Apennines. Between the famous Pistoia Zoo, nature itineraries and the spas of Monsummano, the territory offers a surprising mix of art, nature and leisure for every season.
Pistoia's flavours and traditions
Pistoia's cuisine is the genuine one of the Tuscan tradition: maccheroni with duck, beans, Mucco Pisano beef and the mushrooms and chestnuts of the mountains, with sweets such as the confetti of Pistoia and berlingozzo. Every July the city lights up with the Giostra dell'Orso, a knightly tournament in costume that re-enacts the medieval challenges in Piazza del Duomo, while markets and festivals enliven the whole year. Well connected and human-scale, Pistoia is an ideal stop for those seeking an authentic art-filled Tuscany that is still surprisingly peaceful.
