Mulazzo is a small municipality in the province of Massa-Carrara, at the heart of Lunigiana, the historic borderland linking Tuscany, Liguria and Emilia. The village sits on a hilltop ridge among chestnut woods and small streams feeding the Magra river, surrounded by stone hamlets, terraced slopes and old mule tracks. Scattered hamlets dot the surrounding Apennine hills, and Mulazzo retains the quiet character typical of Tuscan mountain villages, away from the busiest tourist routes yet rich in history, nature and genuine local food traditions.
History and Origins
Mulazzo's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the village became one of the feudal holdings of the powerful Malaspina family, who long ruled Lunigiana through several branches and minor domains. The remains of the Malaspina castle still stand on the hill above the village, testifying to Mulazzo's strategic role in controlling Apennine communication routes. Local tradition also links the village to Dante Alighieri's stay in Lunigiana in 1306, when the poet was hosted by the Malaspina marquises during a peace mission among local families, an episode still remembered in the village today.
Nature and Landscape
Mulazzo's countryside spreads across Apennine valleys covered in dense chestnut woods, once vital to Lunigiana's subsistence economy and now the setting for hiking trails linking the outlying hamlets. The hills surrounding the village offer panoramic views over the valleys below and, in the distance, the Apuan Alps, while small streams flowing toward the Magra river shape a quiet, green landscape. The mid-mountain climate and low level of development have kept the natural environment largely intact, making it popular with walkers seeking cool, peaceful trails away from the summer heat of the coast.

Among them, Montereggio stands out as a village known across Italy as home to travelling booksellers: for centuries, generations of itinerant pedlars set out from here to sell books in town squares throughout the country, a tradition that also gave rise to a notable national literary prize. Walkers can link the various hamlets on foot, discovering small churches, fountains and still-authentic rural corners along the way.
Flavors and Traditions
Mulazzo's cuisine is rooted in the peasant traditions of Lunigiana, where the chestnut tree was for centuries an essential resource: its flour is still used for typical sweets and dishes tied to the farming calendar. Local tables regularly feature testaroli and panigacci, cooked on special terracotta or cast-iron discs and served with pesto or local cheeses, alongside savoury herb pies and dishes made with mushrooms gathered in the surrounding woods. Village festivals, often dedicated to chestnuts or other forest produce, remain the best chance to taste these dishes in their original setting.
