Historia

Historia e Castelnuovo Berardenga

Introduction and location

Castelnuovo Berardenga lies in the province of Siena, Tuscany, and is the largest municipality in the Chianti Senese area. Its territory marks the transition between the hills of Chianti Classico and the Val d'Arbia, offering views that alternate between vineyard rows, woodland and small rural hamlets. Its strategic position, just a few kilometres from Siena, made it for centuries a key point along the routes connecting the Sienese capital with the surrounding countryside. Today the municipality includes, besides its main town, several hamlets scattered across a mostly hilly territory devoted to agriculture and rural tourism.

History and origins

The history of Castelnuovo Berardenga is tied to the affairs of the Sienese countryside in the Middle Ages, when the area lay along the contested border between the Republic of Siena and that of Florence. This frontier position left its mark on the town's layout and on the surrounding territory, dotted with fortified settlements built to defend the access routes. In later centuries the area followed the fortunes of the State of Siena and then the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, retaining a largely agricultural vocation. Even today the landscape tells this story through walled hamlets and farmhouses scattered among the vineyards.

Nature and landscape

The landscape of Castelnuovo Berardenga is typical of the Chianti Senese: gentle hills covered with neatly kept vineyards, centuries-old olive groves and woods of oak and cypress alternating along the white gravel roads. The municipal territory, among the largest in the area, slopes down towards the Val d'Arbia, offering wide views over the Tuscan countryside in every season. Well-kept green spaces are also present, such as historic parks linked to old noble villas, offering quiet spots among century-old trees. This protected, well-preserved rural setting is one of the elements that make the area an ideal destination for authentic contact with the Tuscan countryside.

What to do and see

The centre of Castelnuovo Berardenga invites visitors to take quiet walks through the streets of the village, with glimpses of the surrounding countryside. Among the municipality's hamlets, San Gusmè stands out: a small walled village of medieval origin that has preserved its original layout and an intimate atmosphere. Nature lovers can follow the white gravel roads that cross vineyards and olive groves, ideal for walking and cycling excursions. Nearby there are also historic villas surrounded by parks, evidence of the agricultural and noble importance this area has held over the centuries.

Flavours and traditions

Lying in the southern part of Chianti Classico, Castelnuovo Berardenga is a land of great winemaking tradition: the area's cellars produce renowned wines, the result of work passed down through generations among the hillside rows. Alongside wine, extra virgin olive oil is another pillar of the local agricultural economy, together with seasonal products such as truffles, typical of the Sienese hills. Local cuisine follows the Tuscan peasant tradition, made of simple, genuine dishes, unsalted bread, legumes and grilled meats, often paired with the very wines produced on the surrounding estates.
