Bagnone lies in Lunigiana, a historic border area in the northern part of the province of Massa-Carrara, between the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Apuan Alps. The town stretches along the banks of the Bagnone stream, a tributary of the river Magra, within a green valley dotted with numerous small hamlets scattered across the surrounding hills. Its position away from major tourist routes makes it a genuine destination, appreciated by travellers seeking rural, mountainous Tuscany far from the coast, yet easily reached from nearby Villafranca in Lunigiana and Pontremoli.
History and origins
Bagnone's origins date back to the Middle Ages, when the settlement developed as a fortified outpost controlling the valley, in an area long disputed among the noble families of Lunigiana. Like much of the surrounding territory, it came under the influence of the Malaspina family, who exercised feudal rule here for centuries, leaving a mark still visible in the town's layout.
