の物語

On the Piave river bend

Zenson di Piave lies in the lower Treviso plain, a short distance from Treviso and from the border with the province of Venice, at a point where the Piave river makes a wide curve that gives the municipal territory a narrow, elongated shape between water and farmland. The village is surrounded by flat agricultural land typical of the Piave area, and it looks directly onto the main embankment, which here is more of an identity marker than a simple hydraulic structure. There are no hills or high ground: the landscape is that of the Veneto lowlands, made of fields, tree rows and minor canals, with the river as the only true natural protagonist of the territory.

The First World War and the Piave front

After the defeat at Caporetto in autumn 1917, the Italian army took position on the right bank of the Piave, and for a year the river became the front line. Zenson, precisely because of its position on the bend, was among the most exposed and contested points: here the Italian army held, for a few months between the winter and spring of 1918, a bridgehead across the river, defended at a heavy cost before being withdrawn. The village was almost completely destroyed by bombardment and fighting, to the point that the post-war reconstruction redrew much of the built-up centre. Even today, along the embankment and in the village, memorial stones, plaques and small monuments recall those months, silent testimony to a community that paid a very high price for the war.

A village rebuilt from nothing

The current appearance of Zenson di Piave is, for the most part, that of a 20th-century village: after wartime destruction, reconstruction followed simple, functional criteria, without monumental ambitions, giving rise to an orderly built-up area but one lacking a genuine ancient historical-architectural heritage. This is a condition worth stating honestly: those looking for historic palaces or a medieval centre will not find them here. What Zenson offers instead is the sense of a place that started again from scratch, with the parish church and public buildings rebuilt after the war serving as reference points for community life, in a landscape that still carries the weight of those years, more in collective memory than in stone.

Agriculture and vineyards of the lower Treviso plain

The economy of Zenson di Piave today remains linked mainly to agriculture: fields of maize and cereals alternate with vineyards that fall within the wider Piave wine-growing area, historically associated with Raboso, a native red grape variety typical of this stretch of the Treviso province. It is not a village of large tourist wineries, but the agricultural landscape, with its irrigation ditches and orderly rows of vines, tells the productive character of the Veneto lowlands well, where the river has always meant as much irrigation and fertility as, in the past, the danger of flooding and destruction.

Village life along the embankment

Zenson di Piave is, above all, a small residential and agricultural municipality in the lower Treviso plain, with a slow pace of life tied to the seasons of the fields. There are no major tourist events or a structured accommodation offer: people who come here more often do so to walk or cycle along the Piave embankment, perhaps along the cycle path that follows the river towards the sea, rather than for a proper holiday. It is a village that is honest in its simplicity, worth knowing above all for its deep, almost physical bond with the river and with the history that passed alongside it.

Experiences not to miss

  • Walk or cycle along the Piave embankment at the point of the river bend
  • Look for the memorial stones and small monuments of the First World War scattered in the village
  • Cross the countryside among Raboso vineyards and cultivated fields
  • Visit the parish church rebuilt after the war
  • Stop to watch the river from a vantage point on the embankment at sunset
