Sovramonte の物語
A municipality born from several hamlets
Sovramonte is a scattered municipality, its territory formed by the union of several historic hamlets, including Servo, seat of the town hall, Faller, Aune, Sorriva and other minor localities, spread across a hilly plateau at the foot of the Vette Feltrine. This polycentric structure, common to many mountain municipalities in the Belluno area, reflects a traditionally dispersed settlement pattern, tied to the need to make use of pastures and farmland available at different altitudes. Each hamlet retains its own identity, with small churches, stone-and-timber settlements and a still clearly readable mountain farming landscape of hay meadows, woods and small cultivated plots that tell a story of work and adaptation to mountain terrain.
Val Rosna man and the MUVAR museum
In 1987, at a construction site in Sovramonte's territory, at the confluence of the Rosna and Cismon streams, the remains of a hunter from the late Epigravettian period, more than 14,000 years old, were discovered, buried with an arrowhead and with the body covered in red ochre. The find, of international importance, also yielded one of the oldest documented pieces of evidence of dental care, showing signs of treatment on a decayed tooth. Today the story of this prehistoric hunter is told at the MUVAR Museum, the Museum of Val Rosna Man, set up in the hamlet of Servo: a small but valuable exhibition space offering a close look at a little-known yet extraordinary chapter of Alpine prehistory, right at the site of the discovery.
The Vette Feltrine and the National Park
Sovramonte's territory borders the Vette Feltrine, a mountain group that is part of the Belluno Dolomites National Park, recognised for the richness of its Alpine flora and fauna and for high-mountain landscapes among the most intact in the eastern Dolomites. Trails leading toward mountain huts and karst plateaus start from the municipality's slopes, frequented mainly by experienced hikers and lovers of quiet mountains, far from the major tourist flows of the more famous Dolomites. The park's presence also guarantees environmental protection, which has allowed Sovramonte to preserve a natural landscape of great quality, with mature woods, high-altitude grasslands and a biodiversity that represents one of the lesser-known but most significant assets of the Belluno area.
Lamon beans and sponcio maize: flavours of the plateau
Sovramonte's mountain farming is tied to two products that represent the food identity of the whole Feltre area: Lamon beans, grown on the area's plateaus and prized for their quality, and sponcio maize, an ancient maize variety with an elongated, pointed kernel, traditionally used for mountain polenta. Both crops survive thanks to small local farms that have kept the tradition alive even through the years when mountain farming saw sharp decline. For visitors to Sovramonte, tasting these products in the area's trattorias and farm restaurants is one of the most direct ways to connect with the peasant culture of the Feltre plateau.
Getting there and when to visit
Sovramonte is reached by car from Feltre, following the road that climbs to the plateau through the hamlet of Servo, or from the passes linking the territory with Val di Primiero in Trentino. With no railway station in the village, a car is the most practical option, although some hamlets can also be reached on foot via the Feltre area's trail network. The best time to visit runs from late spring to early autumn, when trails toward the Vette Feltrine are walkable and local farm produce is in full season; autumn in particular coincides with the harvest of Lamon beans and sponcio maize, offering an ideal occasion to combine hiking and food.
