History and origins
Pieve di Cadore has for centuries been the political and religious hub of the Cadore valleys, seat of the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore, an ancient self-governing institution that collectively administered the territory's forestry and pastoral resources and which, in various forms, has survived through the centuries to today as a forestry and cultural management body. The town was the birthplace, in 1488 or 1490 according to the sources, of Titian (Tiziano Vecellio), who would go on to work between Venice and the courts of Europe, becoming one of the greatest exponents of Renaissance painting while always keeping a symbolic bond with his homeland.
What to see
The best-known monument is the Casa Natale di Tiziano Vecellio, a sturdy 15th-century Cadore building declared a national monument in 1922 and open to the public since 1932: the ground floor displays reproductions of the painter's drawings, while the first floor preserves the rooms where Titian spent his childhood. A few steps away stands the Museo dell'Occhiale, the eyewear museum, which displays over three thousand pairs of glasses and optical instruments from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, born from an idea of the physician and archaeologist Enrico De Lotto and developed by Vittorio Tabacchi, president of the Safilo company: inaugurated in 1990, it has been run since 1996 by the foundation of the same name.
Nature and surroundings
The town overlooks Lake Centro Cadore, an artificial body of water created by damming the Piave river and today a defining feature of the landscape, lending itself in summer to walks and excursions along its shores. All around rise the Cadore Dolomites, with the Marmarole range and the Antelao massif forming the backdrop, within the wider Dolomite system recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pieve di Cadore is a starting point for high-altitude excursions and for reaching the nearby resorts of Auronzo and Cortina d'Ampezzo, the heart of Belluno's mountain tourism.

The cuisine of Pieve di Cadore follows the gastronomic tradition of the Belluno Dolomites, made up of simple, hearty dishes tied to sheep farming and mountain life: mountain-pasture cheeses, cured meats typical of Cadore, polenta and game-based dishes form a repertoire suited to the alpine climate. A solid dairy culture is also present, sustained by the mountain pastures that still dot the surrounding valleys, while the local inns and mountain huts remain the best way to get to know this hearty, season-driven mountain cuisine.
