Caprino Veronese の物語
History and origins
The area of Caprino preserves traces of human presence dating back to the Neolithic, with more substantial settlement from the Bronze Age. The Romans arrived in 89 BC and only managed to establish firm control in 16 BC, after fierce resistance from the local population; they rebuilt the settlement under the name Caurin, from which the current name Caprino derives, and developed it as a centre for collecting and working iron from Monte Baldo. In May 1796 Napoleon Bonaparte's troops crossed the Caprino valley, an episode fitting into the long sequence of rulers, Venetian, Austrian and finally Italian, that has marked the town's history.
The Fontana delle Tre Bandiere
In the centre of Caprino stands the Fontana delle Tre Bandiere, a monument that has become the town's symbol: it represents the three dominations, Venetian, Austrian and Italian, that successively governed this foothill territory. It is a small but significant point of reference for understanding, in brief, the historical layering of the area before setting off to explore the mountain.
Monte Baldo
Caprino Veronese has long been one of the access points to Monte Baldo, known as the Garden of Europe for the extraordinary variety of alpine and sub-Mediterranean flora it hosts thanks to the nearby mild climate of Lake Garda. Roads and trails set out from the municipal territory toward the higher elevations, through pastures, alpine dairies and viewpoints overlooking the lake below, offering a hiking experience accessible even to those staying on the coast.
Toward the Santuario della Madonna della Corona
Just beyond Caprino's administrative border, near the hamlet of Spiazzi, stands the famous Santuario della Madonna della Corona, set into the rock of Monte Baldo overlooking a sheer drop above the Adige valley. Although located in the neighbouring municipality of Ferrara di Monte Baldo, the sanctuary is reached precisely by crossing Caprino's territory, which effectively serves as the most natural gateway for visitors arriving from Lake Garda.
Local produce and daily life
Caprino Veronese's economy combines agriculture, livestock farming and small-scale industry, with a still strong link to Monte Baldo's alpine dairies, which produce cheeses and other dairy products appreciated throughout the Garda area. The town sees a more modest tourist flow than the lakeside centres, with daily life shaped by farming activities and a local craft tradition that is still present, while accommodation caters mainly to those using it as a base for hikes on the Baldo.
