Varena の物語

A sunny terrace in Val di Fiemme

Varena sits in a scenic, sun-exposed position in Val di Fiemme, just a few kilometres from Cavalese, the valley's main hub. The surrounding landscape alternates mown meadows, woods of fir and larch, and open views toward the mountains that enclose the valley. Its setting, away from the busiest tourist flows, makes it a good choice for travellers seeking a quiet stay while remaining close to the main services and connections of Val di Fiemme.

History and the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme

Like the other villages in the valley, Varena belongs to the historic territory administered by the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, an ancient institution that has managed the valley's forests and common resources collectively for centuries. This form of shared ownership has shaped the landscape over time, encouraging careful forest management and a close relationship between local communities and the surrounding land. This legacy is still reflected today in the agro-silvo-pastoral organisation of the landscape around Varena and neighbouring municipalities.

Nature between the Lagorai and the Lavazè Pass

Varena's territory looks on one side toward the northern slopes of the Lagorai, a wild mountain range separating Val di Fiemme from Valsugana, and on the other toward the Lavazè Pass, the upland plateau linking Val di Fiemme with Alto Adige, in the area between the Fiemme Dolomites and the Latemar massif. Conifer woods, clearings and high-altitude pastures make up a natural environment rich in trails and scenic viewpoints, enjoyed in both summer and winter.

Things to do: hiking and sport across the seasons

From Varena, hiking routes climb toward the surrounding woods and pastures, connecting to the wider trail network of Val di Fiemme, with access to both the Lagorai slopes and the Lavazè plateau. In winter the area is a reference point for cross-country skiing, thanks to its proximity to trails running through the valley, while more developed ski facilities can be reached in nearby towns. The village's calm setting also lends itself to easy walks among the meadows, suitable for families and less experienced walkers.

Flavours and traditions of Val di Fiemme

Varena's cuisine reflects the food traditions of Val di Fiemme, rooted in mountain produce: dairy and alpine-pasture cheeses, canederli dumplings, polenta served with mushrooms and game, alongside rye and potato dishes typical of the Trentino Alps. The close relationship with the forests managed by the Magnifica Comunità also shows in a strong woodworking culture, visible in local crafts and architecture, with mountain huts and rural buildings built using techniques handed down over generations.
