Madonna di Senales の物語

An alpine village in the heart of Val Senales

Madonna di Senales lies at around 1,500 metres above sea level, in the upper part of the Val Senales (Schnalstal), a side valley of the Val Venosta that branches off near Naturno and climbs north toward the Austrian border. The village's German name, Unser Frau in Schnals, refers to the small church dedicated to the Madonna, and it is the highest of the three main settlements in the municipality of Senales, alongside Certosa and Vernago. Surrounded by conifer forests and rocky slopes, it is an ideal starting point for excursions into the upper valley.

The sanctuary and its pilgrimage tradition

Madonna di Senales takes its name from the pilgrimage church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a destination of devotion for the faithful of the Val Venosta and neighbouring valleys since ancient times. Over the centuries the small sanctuary became a spiritual reference point for the whole community of Senales, set against a backdrop of alpine life shaped by pastoral farming, winter isolation and the popular faith typical of South Tyrol's German-speaking valleys. Even today the village retains the intimate atmosphere of a mountain place of worship, drawing visits and moments of prayer tied to the seasons and local festivities.

Between glaciers and the story of Ötzi

Heading up the Val Senales beyond Madonna di Senales, the valley climbs to the elevations of the Val Senales glacier (Schnalstaler Gletscher), a high-altitude ski area and mountain landscape with views stretching toward the peaks along the Austrian border. It was in this very area, on the Tisenjoch ridge near the Similaun, that the mummy of Ötzi, the Similaun Man, was discovered in 1991, one of the world's most important archaeological finds. The village's connection to this discovery makes the valley a destination that combines glacial scenery, unspoiled nature and a heritage of international significance.

Hiking, skiing and archaeological trails

Madonna di Senales is an excellent base for exploring the Val Senales in every season. In summer it offers access to hiking trails leading up to mountain huts and glacial elevations, while in winter its proximity to the Val Senales glacier ski area attracts sports enthusiasts looking for snow-covered slopes even late into autumn. History and archaeology fans can follow themed trails dedicated to Ötzi, which symbolically retrace the route toward the discovery site, while nature lovers can enjoy gentler walks through the surrounding woods and pastures, past mountain huts and small alpine lakes.

Flavours and traditions of Val Senales

The cuisine of Madonna di Senales reflects the farming and alpine traditions typical of German-speaking South Tyrol: canederli dumplings, speck, mountain-pasture cheeses and dishes based on rye and potatoes accompany the hospitality of the valley's farmhouses and mountain huts. Village life still follows the rhythm of the seasons, from summer transhumance to the high pastures to religious festivities linked to the sanctuary. Local craftsmanship, including woodworking and wool processing, also keeps alive customs handed down through generations, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the culture of the Val Venosta's side valleys.
