Campo di Trens in the Wipptal, Between Trens, Stilves and Mules
Campo di Trens lies in the Upper Isarco Valley, the South Tyrolean Wipptal, about six kilometres south of Vipiteno and twenty-four north of Bressanone, where the Isarco river runs narrow between the first foothills of the Sarentine Alps and the Stubai Alps. The municipality, spread over more than ninety square kilometres of valley floor and high mountain, was created in 1928 through the forced merger of three historically distinct communes: Stilves, on the opposite bank of the Isarco from Trens, Trens itself, the municipal seat, and Mules, five kilometres further south, at the entrance to the side valley of the same name. Alongside these three main settlements are smaller localities scattered across the slopes, such as Egg, a hamlet set above 1,400 metres, and Valgenauna, as well as hamlets like Castelpietra, named after the nearby castle. The population, close to 2,900 inhabitants, is almost entirely German-speaking, a trait shared with the rest of the Wipptal and reflected in place names, rural architecture and local traditions.
The Sanctuary of Maria Trens, a Pilgrimage Destination
The spiritual heart of Campo di Trens is the sanctuary of Maria Trens, the church of Santa Maria Assunta standing in Trens, considered, after Maria Weißenstein near Bolzano, the most important Marian pilgrimage site in South Tyrol. The earliest records of a place of worship here date to 1345, when an indulgence was granted from Avignon, then the seat of the papacy, for building a church dedicated to Saint Mary: the sanctuary soon became a destination of devotion, and by the mid-fifteenth century the pilgrimage was already flourishing, fuelled by accounts of graces attributed to the Virgin's intercession. The current building, in Gothic form, dates to 1498 and houses a wooden statue of the Madonna, venerated as Our Lady of the Avalanches, alongside a depiction of the Pietà; the interior was enriched in the eighteenth century with frescoes by the Viennese painter Joseph Adam von Mölk. Even today thousands of the faithful, mostly from the Wipptal and the rest of Tyrol, reach the sanctuary every year, a religious reference point for the whole valley.
Tasso and Sprechenstein Castles, Sentinels of the Valley
At the southern entrance to the Vipiteno basin, within Campo di Trens, stand two of South Tyrol's best-known castles, facing each other like sentinels guarding the valley. Castel Tasso, known in German as Burg Reifenstein, is among the oldest and best preserved fortresses in the region: first mentioned around 1110 as a fief of the Bavarian Counts of Lechsgemünd, it passed in 1140 to the Lords of Stilves and still preserves a fascinating fortified layout, with towers, courtyards and interiors recounting centuries of castle life. On the opposite slope rises Sprechenstein Castle, also known as Castel Pietra, recognisable by its round tower dating to the thirteenth century, the oldest part of the complex, and by the manor house added in the fifteenth century, which houses the late-Gothic chapel of Sant'Erasmo, completed in 1511. Not far away stands Castel Welfenstein too, another sign of the dense network of fortifications once dotting this strategic stretch of the Wipptal, along the route toward the Brenner Pass.
Farmsteads, Mountain Farming and Rural Landscape
The territory of Campo di Trens, rising from the Isarco valley floor up to high-altitude pastures, retains a rural economy closely tied to mountain farmsteads, the traditional family-run farms typical of South Tyrol. On the steep meadows of the slopes, mountain farming still contends with demanding gradients, devoted above all to livestock rearing and dairy production: several farmsteads, some organic, offer milk, yoghurt and cheeses processed on site, sold directly or featured within a growing farm-tourism trade across the Wipptal. Alongside this agricultural vocation, the municipality also hosts a notable industrial presence, the headquarters of Wolf System, a prefabricated-construction company employing around two hundred people, a sign of a local economy pairing rural tradition with a more modern productive side. The result is a composite landscape, where isolated farmsteads, woods and mown meadows coexist with the settlements of Trens, Stilves and Mules, in a balance typical of South Tyrol's alpine valley floors.
Nature, the Isarco Cycle Path and Experiences in the Wipptal
Campo di Trens is also a natural stop along the Isarco Valley cycle path, the long paved route linking the Brenner Pass to Bolzano that largely follows the old railway line, with a gradient mostly favourable when heading downhill to the south. The stretch crossing the municipality, just south of Vipiteno, makes it easy to reach both the sanctuary of Maria Trens and the castles of Tasso and Sprechenstein by bike, along a route combining nature, history and faith without major technical difficulty, suitable for families too. Hiking trails also set off from the valley floor, climbing toward the higher hamlets such as Egg and toward the pastures and woods surrounding the valley, offering panoramic views over the Vipiteno basin and the peaks enclosing the Wipptal. The proximity of the Campo di Trens railway station, on the Brenner line, makes the municipality easily accessible without a car, favouring a slow tourism of walks, bike rides and visits to historic monuments, in a setting that remains predominantly rural and less crowded than South Tyrol's better-known destinations.
