The pearl of Versilia
Viareggio is the main seaside resort of the Versilia, the stretch of Tuscan coast between the sea and the Apuan Alps, in the province of Lucca. Grown between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as a refined bathing resort, it has kept an elegant and glamorous charm, with its grand hotels, historic cafés and bathing establishments. A seaside city by vocation, it is also linked to shipbuilding, which here produces luxury yachts appreciated worldwide. Its seafront, lively all year round, is the heart of city life and one of the symbols of Versilia.
The Carnival of Viareggio
What makes Viareggio famous worldwide is its Carnival, among the most famous and oldest in Europe, which every winter turns the city into a great open-air spectacle. Along the seafront promenade parade the giant allegorical papier-mâché floats, true moving works of art created by master builders, often with a satirical and political slant. The masquerades, music and crowds create a festive, engaging atmosphere. The tradition is also told in the Cittadella del Carnevale, where you can visit the workshops in which the floats are born.
Art Nouveau and the promenade
Viareggio's seafront promenade is an elegant succession of Art Nouveau and Déco buildings, testimony to the city's golden age as a bathing resort. The symbol is the Gran Caffè Margherita, with its domes and decorations, flanked by shops, historic emporiums and cafés facing the sea. Strolling along the seaside avenue, among palm trees and colourful façades, is a pleasure in every season. The refined, slightly retro atmosphere makes Viareggio different from other seaside resorts, with a character all its own.
Beaches, pine forest and surroundings
Viareggio offers kilometres of wide, equipped sandy beaches, ideal for summer holidays, with the scenery of the Apuan Alps standing behind the city. Behind the seafront stretches the pine forest of Ponente and Levante, a green lung for walking and sport in the shade of the pines. Nearby, the Versilia offers other well-known seaside resorts, the hilltop villages of the hinterland and the nearby natural oasis of Lake Massaciuccoli, linked to the composer Giacomo Puccini, who composed much of his work here at Torre del Lago.
Versilia flavours and traditions
Viareggio's cuisine is the seafood one of the Versilia: the star is fresh fish, from cacciucco to soups, from shellfish to spaghetti with arselle clams, often enjoyed in the historic restaurants by the port. The Carnival tradition marks the winter, while summer brings the glamorous life of the beaches and evenings on the seafront. With its combination of sea, elegance and popular festivals, and its proximity to Lucca, the Apuan Alps and the Cinque Terre, Viareggio is a versatile and charming destination at any time of year.
